I just googled and found this article (from Yale school of public health) - I think your maternity salary benefits may be more than you thought. Women are also not allowed to work in the 8 weeks before and 8 weeks after their due date (imagine that, US moms!).
OP Is it 6 months fully paid? I thought it was 8 weeks fully paid + 6-8 weeks of short term disability (60% pay with a cap), followed by a 4 week ramp up period back at work (you work 60% but get paid 100%). This is hearsay from a friend who is at PWC in the US, but seems to align with their website.
There is no nationally-protected maternity leave in the US, so it will be company dependent. Many of the professional services firms cover 10-16 weeks at full salary, with limited opportunity to extend (unless you want to go unpaid). If you are not employed, you get nothing.
Pregnancy-related healthcare costs are generally covered, but my understanding is that there is a bit of out of pocket cost (I haven’t been pregnant however, so I am not sure there).
Honestly, from everything I’ve heard pre- and post- natal care and support is generally better ex-US. Things like free pelvic floor specialists, a free helper allocated to visiting you post-birth, etc.
I am also surprised that Austria’s maternity pay is that low; I thought that you were entitled to full pay (with no cap) for a period of a few months.
