If you’re working in Pharma either way and want to exit to Pharma, I’d go ZS but I’m obviously biased. You coming in from MBA?
I came in post mba too and was a little hesitant to get niched into Pharma too...but realized I really like the work and, huge benefit to be overindexed in Pharma when shit hits the fan like it did last year - not even a whiff of layoffs and massive bonuses end of last year.
To answer your question, yes definitely happens but keep in mind most consultants will exit to the industries they know best. There is also a non-healthcare space you could try to move in to - by the time you’d be ready to do that, I imagine they’d be fully recovered (it’s stuff like travel and transportation that has obviously taken a short term hit...but again, no layoffs there and continuing to invest / grow the non healthcare pieces of the business)
PwC will give you a stronger business / consulting experience and will position you better for a wider range of opportunities. ZS is really good at a couple things, and if they’re your jam, you’ll be positioned for a couple of highly technical roles.

I worked at both and believe PwC is a better choice depending on the specific group you are hired into. You can also transition to other teams at PwC with broader access to project types. Transitioning out of pharma space with ZS exp. is tough but getting into analytics roles in biopharma is a cake walk from ZS. With PwC, you would have to plan the transition well in advance (specializing in an area and networking with relevant people).
Personally, you would also need to consider travel aspect witj PwC requiring Mon to Thr travel and ZS being office based or local travel, although not sure how COVID has changed things.
Overall, ZS if you love and want to stay in biopharma especially analytics. PwC for all other cases.
I was at PwC, left, so it really depends you and how well you fit with the team. The projects vary so they won’t all be strategy but PwC is a great brand.
