PwC what’s the deal with senior manager and then director titles which compared to EY/D&T is just a senior manager? Does the fact there are 2 essentially “senior manager” equivalents impact the manager role/responsibilities or dilute the manager role?

EY took away vacation time, PwC added a fluff layer... It's a money grab and a way to hold people at lower salaries for longer

Agree with P1. The way it’s been explained to us is that it won’t increase total time at the combined levels if you’re moving to partner (though it clearly will). Supposedly senior managers will only move to director when they’re ready to make the push to partner. They apparently have a few years to make partner at that point or they’re out. If people don’t want to go to partner, supposedly they’ll stay at senior manager forever. At least in tax, it hasn’t been a thing long enough to see the truth to that (the senior manager level was only added 2 or 3 years ago at this point). It’s unclear to me if managing directors will be phased out, if you move there from senior manager after a long enough time, or if a few directors who really don’t want to leave after not making partner will land there. I’d guess either #1 or #3.

Also curious

My understanding is that now there really are not meant to be lifetime directors going forward. If you actually make director it’s up or out after a certain amount of time. So if you don’t think you will do partner I guess you sit at SM forever ?

So there’s no managing director?

There are MDs, but very exception based. It also may depend on the practice / business unit. I was in the first wave/year of promotions to Senior Manager, and as PwC 2 said — the rhetoric now is verrrrrry different than when initially presented 2-3 years ago. So I’m really struggling with whether I want to push for promotion to director or not....

Should I be concerned for my career with lack of billable projects? Background: Analyst hired out of undergrad in July 2020. I have worked on 3 proposals in the last 2 weeks, and 5 in the last 2 months. In the past year since I was hired, I have 8 months of billable work which is actually slightly higher than the other Analysts I joined with. Should I keep collecting paychecks and hoping for projects, or is this a serious issue that should prompt an exit strategy?

Does it make sense to make a lateral move from a Big 4 Advisory position as a Manager to a small (less than 100 person) boutique management consulting firm? Compensation and title are both the same but WLB will be much better at smaller firm (talked with current and former employees) and opportunities to advance in the company could be great as they are looking to grow rapidly. Base compensation overall is $170K in a T3 city. Recruiter wants to set up an interview.
