There are many groups in WNTS besides M&A and ITS. The mix of JD/LLM vs CPA depends on the group, but it is more emphasis on the former compared to the rest of Tax. There aren’t many groups in WNTS that take fresh associates. Instead, many are experienced hires externally or laterally.
Yeah. You probably will need to move to ITS/M&A and get a taste of how specialization works for king to WNTS
I’ve seen people from non-specialty groups tour through WNTS. Those, however, were mostly senior tours, a program which I believe is being phased out.
The best way to move to WNTS would be to transfer to a speciality practice in your market, and after a couple of years, go on a manager/director tour in WNTS. Other than that, you could go $200k+ in debt and spend four additional years in school (JD + LLM).
The problem with getting experience in a specialty practice then going on a manager tour is the time horizon. While tried and true, this is a slow play and will take a few years to navigate.
If you have strong quantitative skills and experience with partnerships, a potential quicker path may be through the sub K modeling practice.
I’ve seen seniors come in from other groups, but it’s rare. There are many specialties besides ITS and M&A, But you’d have to identify where your skill set would be transferable. Only a few groups take associates and seniors.
