It happens, and is often welcome.
You are paid for an 8 hour day. The only time there is conflict is if a particular account is paying for you and your allocation and another account gives you work. Then that’s a HR / creative resource question. For smaller agencies it may be you are hired for 40 hours and therefore are available to work on any project for those 40 hours.
And does it change your rate or are you stuck doing extra work for potentially less pay?
It’s not really less work unless you were sitting idle part of the day.
Yes it is typical if they are happy with your work. That’s the goal of freelance, to get more work. You’re not really getting less pay. Think of it as a regular employee. They pay you to come in every day, and some days you’re busier than others. The goal is to make sure they know you are someone who gets the job done. Then they keep you there longer or at least call you back for another project. Use the extra work as an opportunity to prove yourself to them
Yes.
You are a warm body that will get used where necessary.
You can always threaten to quit.
Thank you, you’re all very helpful!
Yep, very typical and often appreciated.
Not only is it common, it's a sign they like you, and you want it to happen so you stay longer.
A lot of places call you in for one thing to just try you out. They say one week, maybe two, but thats in case you just dont work out or they dont like what you do.
If they say "we're gonna put you on ______ too," it means you passed the test and you'll be around for a while.
And yes that's why you give a good day rate in the beginning. They'll want to pay you the same rate as long as youre there. If you gave them a deal going in, thats all the more reason for them to want to keep you around. Sounds like maybe you effed yourself on this one?
@BBDO 1- Being a PM means effing myself, simply by being a PM in advertising. The reason I ask is because I’m at FL gig where they want me to help with recruiting creatives. I wanted to get the perspective from creatives so I can help best communicate to the ppl I bring in what the job really will be.
