QQ: my son drives a box truck state to state (massachusetts to nebraska…lives in Chicago) for an owner who splits profits down the middle. the Owner of the truck takes gas (even though fuel card is provided to my son) out and when he rents him rooms for overnight rides. Last week he made $600 which IMO is ridiculous. What should he be making more per mile? Should the driver be responsible for gas and room? Please help!

I personally think the employer should be liable for gas and rooms. He's hired to drive the truck from state to state, and any costs he incurs because of that should be covered by his employer. I don't think that sounds fair at all, what is he supposed to do, drive the truck without gas and never sleep? Doesn't make sense.

like

totally agree with you

My step dad is a truck driver. If he’s an independent contractor, the driver is typically responsible for gas/hotels/etc. if he works for an actual company typically they will pay for gas (not sure of the overnight situation but most truckers sleep in their trucks - maybe to avoid hotel fees?).

He makes great money though, even after expenses. I want to say he makes about $0.95-ish/mile driven. And he gets to write off all his gas/expenses/truck at tax time.

Thank you for this info.

Traveling nurses or warehouses worker traveler get their accommodations completely taken care off. It should be the same for truck drivers.

There is plenty of job out there especially in the transportation industry. While I can’t tell you what is the norm on the profit split and expense sharing, you can negotiate from a position of strength if you have a good competiting offer in hand from another company.

So he gives him a gas card, then takes gas money from your son? He claims gas as an expense, although your son is paying it and not actually him.

like

yes, that’s my issue…it’s a gas card with the company name on it

I had an initial call with a recruiter and got turned down about 6-7 months ago. I was having a really bad day (just found out a relative had passed, more than normal work stress, ect) and just really had a tough time gathering my thoughts. I honestly should have rescheduled the call but I just didn’t really want to have to push it out and coordinate schedules again. Any chance I can get a second look? The career path aligns with my interests and my background is a great fit.

What should I do?

Thank!

I am a newly promoted supervisor who has been with my company for 3 years. The promotion came with a salary increase & I was happy about that.

However, since in my new role I have come to discover that people I am now overseeing have a higher pay rate than I do. Some have been with the company longer than I have, some have not.

Maybe it was my bad for not asking for not negotiating my pay raise, but I am wondering what you would do in this situation?

Payroll people this question is for you! I recently got approval for a pay adjustment and was told the new rate would take effect 7/17 pay period. I still have to sign off on my time card from last pay period with old rate and boss has to submit tomorrow. My employee portal still shows old rate even though new rate was supposed to take effect today 7/17. Should I be concerned or will new rate populate after I get paid on Wednesday?

advice: asking for more money. currently making around $52k in an entry level position to my team. I know they’re considering me for a new opening coming in Q4, I’ve spoken with both my manager and VP about my career goals. I’m pretty sure that they’d fill this role anywhere in the mid 60s. if I were to get it, that’s a 10k pay bump for me, and I desperately need it. is that normal? I’ve never been in this situation b4 and want to make sure I get paid adequately but I’m young and have 0 insight.
