Quantifying work life balance... how much would annual salary value would you place on not having to work 60+ hours and have a steady 40hour work week with the occasional crunch around deliverables?

For example, if you made 125k at one place and for 90% of the year had a steady 40 hour work week, compared to making 175k a year but working many more hours and landing consistently in the 50+ hour range. That is a different of 45k... but significantly more time of your life spent working. After taxes taken out it’s even less impactful from a monetary gain stand point. I love money, but I also dislike working. I have an opportunity to join a big 4, and make that difference in salary, but feel like 45k isn’t worth more than the steady and stressful work life balance I have at Slalom. Was curious to what everyone else’s view on quantifying more salary vs. avg. work week hours.

I can't function at my best when I'm doing that many hours regularly at work, so it'd be setting myself up for misery and failure... I feel I'm encouraged to build my industry profile and skills instead of working lots of overtime hours, which is pretty liberating. I genuinely like my coworkers, too. Plus, I like having a life a lot. I get to spend any 'extra' time and energy with my husband, and learning to fly. I don't think I'd have time for all that elsewhere. But it *is* a lot of money if you can hack it, and that's not nothing. I wish you lots of success whatever you decide!

3 yrs ago I took a 25% step-down in total comp from $200K to $150K to try a role at a new company. I enjoyed having less pressure/stress at work, but I also had the benefit of dual income from a working spouse. I have now shifted to another new company 3 yrs later and got my total comp back up to $240K - and I don’t anticipate increased pressure/stress at the new company.

Can we all agree to negotiate overtime pay in our next compensation conversation? If everyone negotiates it then firms have to do something right? I understand that we are SaLaRy and that’s “just how it’s always been” but times are changing and we should be compensated extra for the hours over 40 hours worked.

Hiring question: candidates today are requiring very high salaries and we are getting to a point where the average candidate for a particular role is asking for more than I make. Now that I am trying to backfill with this new level of salary and I want to use this opportunity to go back to my boss to get an bigger increase. Any advice or thoughts?
