Question about resumes - at what point, if ever, is it okay for your resume to be longer than one page? I recently updated my resume and it’s now about a page and a quarter. There’s nothing I want to cut, though I could cut some stuff if appropriate. For context, I’ve been in the workforce for about 15 years. Thanks all!

I hired professional resume writer, he said more than one page is fine esp as you gain more experience

Thank you! I’m realizing I only ever see resumes of people just starting out, so I don’t know what’s acceptable or common for more seasoned applicants. Thank you for the insight!

I would say back and front is fine in many fields as you gain experience, but a half page is weird? in my pre lawyer life i used to teach resume workshops and stuff, and generally I think one full page front and back (two page pdf) is fine as long as youve been out of school for more than 3-5 years and have had more than one job or relevant experience

Thank you! I ran my question and my resume by my family after I posted here. They agreed with you and helped me get my resume back to one page 🙂

I think it’s normal and fine to have >1 page resume. Also depending on how you apply, you may have to submit through an employers portal or on LinkedIn and the format gets changed anyway, so it’s common for the hiring manager to receive a document that’s longer/ format different from what you submitted.

Thank you!

What’s on the resume? Would it work to have a 1 page resume and a 1 page deal sheet/case sheet instead? I got this suggestion as a senior and had v good results and feedback after making this change - the deal sheet gave folks a really good picture of what my experience was more so than “associate at fancy firm #1, #2 and #3” and I got a lot of positive comments on it from interviewers. And I could shorten the resume because I wasn’t trying as hard to explain what I did at each firm (which was the same job basically anyways so looked repetitive).

I would strike any prelawyer experience (including legal internships) unless especially relevant.

A recruiter recently told me that it should be more than one page if you have been practicing for awhile (I’ve been practicing for 9 years). I have an extensive “representative matters” section to highlight my specific experience.

So I guess the question here is how to reframe bragging into something more acceptable...

I quit. I was respectful. Thankfully, every person I have told has been so nice, and I wasn't immediately bounced out by my leadership (which has happened), but I have been surprised by my own bittersweet tears. If they actually cared, why didn't they say so sooner? I gave so much, and I was consumed by this organization. I invested in them, but my investment and dedication were not reciprocated, which is why I ever even entertained leaving. I don't know why it hurts, but it really, really does.

I’ve been asked to weigh in on how to improve my firms parental leave policy. It’s currently 8 weeks paid for birth parent with an extra week for each year at the firm (up to 12 weeks total) and 2 weeks paid for non-birth parent. I’m in a major city, firm is a boutique that has been around a very long time. What would you suggest? Any studies or research you’ve seen recently on trends in parental leave policies also helpful. I’d like to have some sort of data to back up what I recommend. TIA!

Anyone have three kids and working in big law? I just found out I’m pregnant with no. 3 and it’s been a lot trying to juggle morning sickness, but based on my experience, I know this is only the tip of the iceberg of what’s to come. My husband and I are elated, but the anxiety of being a mom of 3 kids and working in big law is preventing me from truly enjoying this news. It would be good to know what it’s really like having 3 kids so that I can evaluate how long I really have left in big law.

Question for a crowd with good negotiation skills...my sibling is marrying someone of a different faith. My mom is freaking out and doesn’t want to go to the wedding. How can I resolve this?

Discovered major pay difference between myself and two new male hires with equal experience. Asked for a raise and was shot down due to Covid and essentially told they make more (were talking a 30k) bc they don’t have my “other responsibilities” aKa my two kids. I know my productivity is effected by parental responsibility but I don’t feel that alone justifies the difference. I know our billable output isn’t drastically different. Not sure what my next steps should be and welcome any advice.

Hoping for some advice on how to properly leverage another job offer to help make another company pull the trigger on you. I’ll explain: I’ve been interviewing with Company A for a month now and have met with GC, CFO, creatives, and today the final round with HR and CEO. I have a good feeling they will extend an offer but it’s not a slam dunk. I think I’m top 2. Company B has extended an offer but one that I’m not really considering (moving to a new city/not enough money). Do I mention this....

I am purchasing a home and my boyfriend wants in on the deal as a co-owner. It is only me on the mortgage. We are planning on writing up a co-ownership agreement with a 60%/40% split and yes he will be paying 40% of the mortgage, down payment, and property taxes etc. He wants to be on the title as a tenant in common to reflect that %. Is that fair? I just want to make sure I’m protected but I also understand that if he’s paying all this money, he wants some security as well
