This won’t be a popular answer, but most people on my team (including myself) hate meetings, but only because every PM in the office schedules status meetings with teams that work across accounts and that adds up to a good chunk of time every week spent in a standup.
What I’ve done is had more face to face chats with team leads and posted recaps in the slack channels for the team (assuming the channel doesn’t move so fast that it gets buried). It’s more day to day work for the PM and requires follow up but I’ve found people react better when I don’t take up space on their calendars.
My teams always responded to a scrum better than a “status”. Make a scrum wall!
...and I’m managing 25+ individual workstreams staffed by 30+ people across various depts. This group sits and works all over the agency and their responsibilities cross over the entire business. There’s not a natural divide in the work to allow people to drop into status and different times for different info.
I want status to feel like a positive use of time but most people struggle through it. Anybody have any suggestions about managing a giant group like this without them feeling like I’m wasting their time on updates that don’t apply to them?
I agree w SPM 1.
