Question for Americans who left for the UK or Australia: Is it better? Like day to day, are you glad you left? Ik recent events might’ve skewed things for all of us, but how often do you think to yourself “Damn, I sure am glad I live here now?” Would love to hear specific reasons or just a simple yay or nay

I’ve gone back and forth between the US and the UK (mixture of London and Manchester) my entire life. Ultimately, no hence why I’ve gone back and forth so much. I understand how recent events impact that thought, but when you go elsewhere there is something else, people tend to romanticize their travel but once they do a proper international move they realize the same level of annoyances exist. I really encourage folks to try it for 1-2 years and see for themselves - if it’s a fit then great, if not you can at least say you tried

I would say overall no it's not, primarily because of economic opportunity in the us (speaking as an american who did 6 years in the uk)

If you ever move anywhere else i think you'll be surprised how similar your life is day to day. Same offices, same people, just different accents

If you're impoverished i could see it being better with more socialized benefits but as a proffesional the opportunity you have in the us is unparalleled

I am Indian. I have 4 brothers. 1 in Canada, Germany, Australia and Singapore. All 4 of them are actively pursuing ways to come and settle in the US.

From their stories, I would surmise that perhaps as bad as we are — we are the best of the lot.
Which isn’t a high bar but sadly that’s the best we get here. The only thing I can recommend in the US, live in very diverse cosmopolitan educated enclaves like Raleigh, NYC, DC and Seattle etc.

Also life for PoC outside America in other western nations is a lot harder presumably
(I have heard 100 different stories of name calling, racist behavior, occurrences that made them or their children at school uneasy, these stories of close family and close relatives from other places like UK, Australia especially and parts of Europe).

To the contrary, knock on wood, in my 8-9 years never have I ever been slighted at all as brown Indian woman.

Yes, I’m glad I left. I initially left for the UK, but now I’m in Australia. I was in SF in between, and the crazy high cost of living, amount of human and dog excrement (the City of Westminster’s sidewalks were spotless), cost of healthcare (no/very low out-of-pocket costs with the NHS and Medicare), and the fact that anyone around me could have a gun reminded me that I didn’t want to stay in the USA. Recent events only solidify that I want to stay away (except for the distance from family/friends and American salaries are much higher).

Recent events?

Yes!

As a queer woman of color, I'm thinking more and more about leaving the US one day if we keep going down the path we're headed. I worry about a retraction of my rights and for my safety.

I don't disagree that we've made progress and that other countries have their problems too, but I do think that the US is trending away from democracy and towards authoritarianism. I genuinely worry that if Trump or someone like him gets elected in 2024, it could be the end of free and fair elections. These struggles are unique to America that other developed democracies aren't facing

Anecdotally, it seems to me that of the people in the US who talk about leaving, the % that actually does so is close to zero

Does anyone know of any defense-specific startups hiring? A good friend of mine is looking for roles in startups on the policy/strategy/investor relations side of things fresh out of school. He’s new to startups side of things but has lots of research experience and brilliant.

We work with earlier stage startups at my company but I’d love to point him in the right direction - either in form on a job board, companies or specific players in that space willing to take on an intern. TIA!
