Very late on. Not sure I ever really thought about it seriously until I was pretty far through the process. At Director i genuinely wondered if it was something I wanted to do - or wether a career as a high earning salaryman would be better.
I went up first time (Alix) after being asked to submit a business case - and went for it initially thinking, “Theres no chance I’ll make it up” to getting into the process and thinking, “Well it would be good actually” to going through the full process and thinking, “I’ll be devastated now if I don’t get it”. I did get it and was always pretty proud that I was ‘asked’ to join - rather than me pushing hard for it internally.
I was always just focused on doing good work and building a platform for myself to be successful.
When I made senior manager and realized I had an open field ahead of me to run the operating unit, basically put all my time and effort into embedding myself in 1-2 strategic accounts and bringing in some long term revenue. Connections and revenue are king.
Workload drastically increased and pressure levels to hit gross margin goals of the area is pretty relentless. Can’t see it getting much better for 3-5 years and moving into a more client/marketing role.
It’s fine to have a long term goal of making partner but it doesn’t really become tangible until SM level and you see you’ve got the support and the track ahead looks open.
From SM as P1 said. Support is needed from majority if not all partners. Also support from home. Being Partner in B4 requires a lot from your spouse, and restrict your investment options. It’s the culmination of skills, hard work, patience/timing, and luck.
After becoming Partner, I regret the career move so definitely not a career path for everyone.
Like not being partner in B4?
