No that is not at all what you should be doing! You’re capable of so much more. My firm is training me on FTO searches and drafting responses to office actions and I am currently only a paralegal with an MS in chemistry. Lateral to find a firm with better training in place or demand they send you more substantial work!

I don’t know much about firms outside of Boston, DC, and Chicago, unfortunately, I’m sorry. Also, re: the ‘lol ouch’ comment, I’m not 100% sure what they meant by it, but I don’t want you to think that you aren’t getting substantive work while other practice groups are handing that type of work off to a random paralegal and feel disappointed, etc. - I am taking the patent bar in a few months and just have attorneys that are very supportive of me and want to prepare me for the new position early!

You definitely need to get experience in claim drafting and office actions. Sounds like you’ve been doing paralegal work. Ask for more substantive work.

…be getting when young? I don’t want to lose all my lateral options when I’m more experienced because I can’t handle something basic like an office action response.

Does your firm do originating drafting? What % of the practice is it? That’s where you will learn the substantive practice.
