Question for career/long-term clerks. Do your courts have parental leave policies? Mine doesn’t have a policy. Curious what others have or don’t have. This is not including FMLA. I mean something separate from that.

Do you also mean separate than the leave act for federal career clerks?

Beyond that I’d imagine it’d just be about talking to your judge.

I wasn’t aware there was a leave act for federal career clerks. I just Googled it. It seems like it mirrors FMLA, but with paid time off? I work for a state court, so I do not have that benefit unfortunately.

Moving to San Diego in the spring from the central coast. Any recs on places to live (late 30’s with a kid)? Want to be close to restaurants and things to do, but a little too old and tired for gas lamp!

I want to ask to change my hours from 8am -5pm with an hour lunch(which I rarely take!) To 7:30am - 2:30pm with no lunch. My child is starting kindergarten and I want to pick her up from school and spend evenings with her. Getting off at 5pm I would be in traffic and probably won’t get home until 6pm where I would have to cook dinner. This leaves me with about an hour to spend with her before bed time. Anyone work these hours in HR? Wondering the odds of this being approved?

How do most people’s firms calculate billable hours for associates? In other words, what hours are counted towards your target? Do you get credit for things like CLE’s, mandatory trainings, etc.? What about pro bono work (assigned by the firm) or writing for firm publications? Or time that a billing partner writes off on paid matters? What about sick or other leave credits? Is it pretty much everyone’s experience that it’s just straight billable hours on paying clients?

I think my brother is an idiot when it comes to his dating life. He recently started dating someone that the whole family loves - really down to earth, great personality, educated, hot and has a career. I just found out my bro is cheating on her with his ex (who is toxic/manipulative, stole money from my mother & doesn’t have a job or trying to get one). From a personality, values & looks perspective, the new girlfriend is what every guy would dream of. Im jealous &wish I could date her instead

As a divorcee with a kid, i find it extremely hard to find friends who can relate, or even making friends as it seems there’s a stigma attached to you because your relationship didn’t work out.

Just had a crying fit on the floor. 35M, ex wife had an abortion in November and we split in December. Dealt with a lot in my life but think losing the kid broke me for good.

When she attended she said that there was no point of responding my email as we are meeting anyway. Later on I had 2nd interview with the hiring manager. After 45 minutes she said they will let me know...

The question is, is graduation from law school, not minimum competency? With this line of reasoning we are saying that law schools do not produce competent future lawyers, so should we instead switch to a system of taking the bar without the three years of a measure that frankly bar associations have deemed not an adequate measure? Dash this comment aside if it is fallible, but there is something here that has been overlooked. Competence is not regurgitation and memorization.

Still WFH? What are other chambers doing for task management? Our chambers has been keeping up with assignments, incoming emails needing judge’s eyes, and written orders, all through Microsoft Planner. We share PDFs through Sharepoint folders. Although we still email draft orders back and forth, the system seems to work well enough. We still aren’t operating at our previous capacity because it takes 10x the number of steps to get a motion heard or an order entered—90% of our workload.

Change my mind: A motion to “clarify” one of the court’s orders is actually just a cute, roundabout way of asking for reconsideration.

As someone who is interested in public interest law (open to impact litigation or policy work), does it make sense to clerk in state court -- trial level -- and if so, for how long? I have a background in finance, having been a Finance Disbursing Officer in the Army for 6 years with one deployment in that role. Additionally, I am currently a JAG attorney and studying for my CAMS, hoping to take that exam in the next month or two. Any advice or referrals for anyone I can talk to learn more about the field? Thanks! :)
