Question for partners who had or have an entrepreneurial itch. Do you find being a progressional services partner scratches the entrepreneurial itch or at least gives you a large sense of autonomy/satisfaction? Does this change based on size of firm? Eg I suspect boutiques would feel a lot more entreprenurial than a Big 4. Thank you and looking forward to hearing your thoughts.

Oddly I think it’s the opposite. A Big4 will use your talents and allow you to specialize in something you already enjoy. Boutiques are generally run by a small inner circle and you may get as much autonomy as you think.

I’m a satisfied big4 partner and have plenty of autonomy, enjoy most of what I do, and learn from my clients through relationships and being their trusted advisor.

Ah that’s very interesting. I have seen that with boutiques there might be certain strong personalities as well and those effects are likely to be magnified.

As a Big 4 partner do you find that there are a lot of opportunities to GTM with other practice partners? That seems like an exciting prospect to me. I was most recently at a Big 4 and currently with a B4 strategy practice. I think the breadth of services makes it super interesting for a partner but that’s just my hunch.

GTM strategy is tricky. I have an internal network that I’ve worked with for a long time and we present well together. Some practices are better than others on a cohesive GTM strategy. It’s way more work than you realize to put a team together that works well.

I've gotten to do a lot of entrepreneurial things within the firm, launch new offerings, build new practices, lead acquisitions, etc. all while making a partner salary which is nice. Won't ever have the $1bn outcome but still pretty good

smart

For context I’ve always had entrepreneurship in the back of my mind for the long term and I’ve dabbled with startups and the search fund world. However I’ve also had very fast progression in consulting and think I could make partner one day. I also like consulting so am considering staying on this path if partnership offers sufficient autonomy.

I try to tell myself I shouldn’t care, but so far I am yet to feel it. On the inside I do know it bothers me.

I’m an industry senior, manager is retiring in 2 months & new tax director is joining this week. Have been at company for 15 months. Considering talking to HR & new director for a plan to grow my career at this company; company is growing & likely we will need 2 more ppl at associate/senior levels (we have 1 associate). What is a realistic time frame to set for promotion to manager & what goals should I be setting? Company is tiered partnership, acquiring new businesses & operates multi-state.

I have been offered a position at a non-US B4 with a 2 year path to partner. I know one of the partners at the local firm and have the support of the regional service line lead, and am bringing a specialized skill set they are trying to open a new business around. The KPIs seem achievable and I’ll be in charm school to help build support within that timeline. Most of me thinks a 2 year path under these circumstances realistic but my inner skeptic is jaded. Anything I might have missed?

Hey Big 4 Partners, given independence constraints, I assume you buy investment properties. do you believe this to be superior to buying stocks, and what do you do to educate yourself in this process?
