Question for seniors and associates, what do you wish you had gotten more coaching or help with when you were starting out at your company?

1. Shouldn’t say that it’s fine to charge as many hours as possible. Then when budget went bad, started saying that the seniors/staffs didn’t have good project management skills.
2. Take the time to train the new staffs (both newly staffs and experienced hires). We know nothing about the company’s systems and way to do things.
3. Being more understanding. Stop comparing new people with the team’s star performers at the same level. New people need time to adjust and everybody really do learn at different speed.
Just a few of my thoughts. Though, I doubt companies will change. Only star performers can stay, the rest who cannot deal with the constant competitive rating, will stray.

New staff and experienced staff sometimes don’t have the real technical skills that you are looking for so taking the time to really teach the concepts. I know some people do this not but everyone.

Also teaching / practicing how to lead client calls and other types of presentations.

I wish that people had actually listened to what we said more. There were a few people that were horrible incharges but were good from a technical perspective (that doesn’t necessarily translate well into being a good teacher or leader). When people brought it up, no one listened and gave stupid excuses for the incharges. It wasn’t until a staff had a blow up with one incharge and the staff quit that managers and above actually realized how horribly the incharges were treating some of the staff.

So I keep applying for leadership roles (supervisor and manager level). Keep making it to final interviews and I am not chosen. The feedback I get is they were very impressed with my interviews and they forward my resume to there colleagues for another leadership opportunity and I end up with the same results. They do include that they went with someone that had mgmt experience. The emails aren’t generic I may add. However I am not sure what else I can do to land a spot? Thoughts please!

I am a beginner DA user and trying to gain experience. I am trying to do a project on ESG for fun, and having some difficulty coming up with a hypothesis. Want to pick your brains and see if I can get started. I have data about CO2 emisiones, electricity usage, air quality, and that’s pretty much it. Using alteryx and powerbi (to visualize results) as I don’t have any other programs. Thanks so much!

Is my situation normal or am I getting taken advantage of? Manager promotion goes info effect now. Over the past month I’ve been getting introduced to my new clients I’ll be managing. BUT none of my senior work falls off my schedule until after 10/15. Of which normally Aug-Oct was/is my busiest time of year as a senior. I’m getting really worried about how to manage my new ‘manager’ clients while still my entire old senior load

Hi Everyone,
I hope life is treating you well.
I recently moved to Ottawa from Louisville, Kentucky, and I am looking for an accounting job in Ontario or Quebec. I have work experience in Tax& Finance and an MBA in Accounting. I was wondering if any of you could refer me for an open position in your company ( after we’ve had a chance to talk, of course) or put me in contact with a member of your hiring team.
Please let me know if any of you would be comfortable doing so.

Thanks,
Sarah

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

How does one find direction in what they want to do in life? I don’t find my job as a tax manager fulfilling and my busy time conflicts with some of my favorite hobbies, skiing and snowmobiling. I find it hard to determine my next step because I’m all about relationships, love my clients and am a sales/big picture thinker, so naturally industry doesn’t interest me. I’ve been super lost for a few years and think I need to act on my unhappiness and get out while I’m young. Any advice?
