Coach
We have hired several people who are older then your typical campus hire. I think it’s a lot more common with people having a second career given you can get a masters in accounting in a year and immediately start a new career.
I did this and got hired as a staff at 39
At my old firm a lady in my cohort coming in as an associate was in her 60s. So 🤷🏼♂️ it can be done. You have some experience so that’s great and honestly we can’t even keep staff in PA right now so firms are literally trying to get the best they can possibly get even if that means you’ve had gaps in employment. We recently hired a bartender who has his accounting degree and MBA and no experience at all.
I started late, hired as trainee at 28, promoted to senior at 31. But it was a medium firm and the partner knew I was getting a visa to move to the US. So after one busy season as senior covid hit, knowing I was moving, they fired me. Unfortunately embassy was shut down for unforeseeable time, so I took a position as experienced associate at PWC for nearly 1 year until I could finally move. The other gap was after the move, bureaucracy took another full year to clear work authorization. I have plenty of experience with PIE, IFRS and reporting to parent companies out of the country, but no US GAAP. So long story short I’m now 35 looking for a senior position. Is this still attainable or should I just move to the industry?
You have a legitimate story behind it. Just say what you wrote above and they’ll disregard those gaps in the resume.
Not a recruiter, but got hired as a staff when I was 33 years old. I have seen some other older staff, so I don't think the age will be the issue. The problem is hard to put all these long hours, especially if you have a family.
Does it have to be big 4? My firm just hired some guy with a 5 year gap as a senior. I think he’s about 40, but not sure why age matters.
