I don’t people think “I don’t know where to get my news from” but rather they think other people are swayed by the leanings of their media choices.
Also, I think the key is “mainstream”, where the vast majority of the population gets their news. Social media and news organizations have gotten very good at what sells to their audiences. If you have a conservative view, Fox News is going to feed into that x10. If you have a liberal view, CNN is going to feed into that x10. They’re not going to present the mainstream with boring stories, they need sensational pieces that feed to their demographic.
You’re right. It’s all about the ratings. But what I’ve noticed (pattern, not generalization) is that people who complain about mainstream media either mean 1) “your” media is lying to you - as in the opposite of theirs (eg CNN v Fox) because they are completely oblivious to the biases of their sources or 2) believe the random blog they subscribe to provides them with the facts that the mainstream media does not.
I do a mix to see what each side is spinning and take each with several grains of salt. Preferably, when time permits, I like to read the actual source documentation. 2015 Paris agreement, the actual legislation, etc.
For AP, Reuters and base reporting entities, I don't mind the deep investigating. My wish is that they had the same vigor and enthusiasm to investigate and challenge everyone equally hard. I'm not sure their revenue model so maybe they need to produce more left leaning content? Or maybe that is just what gets picked up more often since there are more left leaning outlets? They risk losing there peer friends if they did?
For broadcast media, the FCC needs to mandate that these shows have a banner at the top saying "this an opinion show with analysis skewed by our editorial board presented for your entertainment."
In my opinion you need to get most of your news from mainstream newspapers (NY Times, WSJ) instead of cable news. The newspapers have nuance that you won’t get on TV. You can then augment the newspapers with a blog or TV show, but the fringe stuff can’t be allowed to dominate.
In many ways the internet is awesome, but it’s horrible that it made people stop paying for news. Real journalism, especially at the local level is dying.
If you’re really sick of the cable channels, please ask yourself when was the last time you paid for news?

I’m not worried about where I get my news because I have very high media literacy. Most people don’t. That’s the problem.
