Question for vets who have transitioned. What skills or training would you have liked to have prior to starting a corporate job? Things like - excel, sales process, financials, etc...

Technical skills like development languages and software configuration (tableau, SharePoint, Salesforce etc). You can always learn soft skills in your career. Technical skills right off the bat give you some solid groundwork to build on even if u have no interest in being a developer.

I would have liked soft skills/corporate communications training. I lacked a lit of the ability to be euphemistic and that caused me some trouble.

As far as applications training, I think it is more about what kind work you are doing.

An obvious one for me is resume writing and telling my story to someone in the corporate world.

One that seems a bit silly now but that I struggled with would be how to dress. After 9 years enlisted I had little sense how to dress in the corporate world. When I transitioned I couldn’t have told you the difference between a single and double breasted suit. I also had no real idea of what shoes to wear and with what suits, etc, etc, etc.

I had the advantage of completing my MBA as part of my transition to figure these things out. I couldn’t imagine coming straight out and not being secure in these basic things. I think it has a big impact on your confidence when you know you are dressed right. Maybe this is silly but it was a concern of mine.

I think needs will vary by population. Most vets I’ve worked with were officers. Their needs will be different than enlisted guys like me who have to go get a degree first and then move into the corporate world.

I saw a lot of my fellow enlisted struggle with the basics: resumes, interviews, etc. Many need individual attention to help them translate their stories into something hiring managers can consume and understand, and, ultimately, see the value in.

Can someone give me insight on completing projects for interviews? I’ve interviewed for a very associate level role that pays ~65k. The interview went well but now they want me to not only do a SWOT analysis on the company as well as present for 45 minutes on a 4 person panel. I’ve done assessments before for interviews but this seems a little excessive based on the role (eCommerce specialist) and pay range. Has anyone experienced something like this before?

Anyone day trade large capital on 1-2 stocks targeting 1% gain? The risk to reward is crazy but the thought would be to stick to high value stocks that easily move 1%+ daily. I know the general rule is to risk < 1% of portfolio/trade, but seeing TSLA and NFLX price movements I’m tempted to go in 50k on a dip and set a limit order. I’m thinking worst case of not recovering from a dip would be that I’d own a lot of one stock?

Hi is there any opening in Gartner for operations or talent management profile?

Hey, Fishes! I will be joining Deloitte India as a Management Consultant in the Strategy and Business Design (GBS) practice in the month of August. I had a few questions:
1) Difference between Strategy and Operations (S&O) and Strategy and Business Design (SBD)?
2) Estimated percentage of Travel to client locations?
3) % of WFH and WFO
4) Suppose I want to change my location somewhere in between my stint, will that be possible?
5) How to claim Telephone expenses along with monthly salary?

I found a company I was really excited about working at. I applied for the job and went through 5 rounds of interviews. At the end they said I was OVER qualified and they want me for a different position higher up in the company. I was super excited they then had me go through 5 more rounds, 3/5 people were the same. The interviews mostly went "didn't you get the job, I highly recommend you? I'll just put you down as a 10". After those were done they told me I was UNDER qualified. Can't win!
