As a kid, neither will make much of a difference. 18+, travel is easier on a US passport. But also see how college admissions work. Some have a reserved quota (and associated fees $$$) based on such matters. Check to see if it’s residence vs citizenship vs passport

like

If you are sure to return to India , take Indian passport and us birth certificate/ssn so that he can benefit as Indian student for fees. Once he is 18, he has to decide whether he will be Indian citizen or us citizen and choose the passport accordingly..

5 & 8 years old.. us citizen are on par with oci cards in India- you cannot hold govt office , can’t vote and can’t hold agricultural land is what I know

Get him a US passport. He’ll be thankful for it. Indian passport has one of the lowest travel index scores.

It's disgraceful really. India has gone nowhere since independence. Shows the ranking of the Indian passport globally. Very much third world status.

I bet the kid will run back to the States the day he graduates high school!

funny

I am not being dense. I don’t understand why someone will need to “run” away from India the day he / she will graduate high school. Hence was asking but haven’t seen a reply yet

You cannot relinquish your child’s right to US citizenship. Only they can do that at 18. So you can get the kid an Indian passport and s/he can come back anytime they choose as a US citizen. Remember that they will not be apply for a “visa” to come here - they will remain a citizen till they voluntarily renounce citizenship after 18.

Don’t overthink. You can move back to India and live a good life with US citzenship

like

Get both. No harm Hopefully by the time they are adult, india will allow dual citizenship

like

Yeah Its not your choice op. The kid is American

like

OP your writing style is very distinct. I believe you posted about a situation about a friend who married a guy who accepted dowry. right?

like

What did you mean 'had a new born'? I was confused when you used past tense in this context.

People - as I understand i don’t have a choice, and the child is American. My actual question was from India’s perspective, are there any limitations if the kid has an American passport vs Indian passport e.g. college admissions, government jobs, ability to buy land etc ?

like

Most forms do ask a citizenship question.

Travel is easy on a US passport. You dont need to apply for visas for a lot of countries.

If you want to move back to India, move on any passport. Just do it. Implications of having US passport is you can always travel to US for work but you will have to pay taxes on global income in US

Can’t help but feel invisible in my current situation- I’ve been pursuing a transfer for over a year (within my same group) and even though I’ve repeatedly asked for help and pulled in directors and partners —I keep getting pawned off to different people. This has cost me a promotion this year although I’m a high performer and my pay is at the high end of my bracket. Meanwhile, white colleagues are getting promoted each year (unheard of). I am told that i’m getting paid well so to be ‘happy’

I work with several people with kids and I have noticed quite often that they completely disregard any issues of people with no kids and try to one up work life imbalance conversations with stories of them being parents. It must be hard being a parent but I don’t think people at work should be treated differently or given any additional consideration just because they have a kid. You already get parental leave so If I’m expected to work 12hr I ask the same to be expected from my peers with kids.

I need advice, has anyone been in a similar sit? Met a guy on Bumble in March. He had gotten out of a 4 year relationship in December. We dated for 2 ish weeks, on date 3 we made out and touched (no sex but we both came). After the date he tells me he needs time to himself, his mind is all over the place. We’re May and he reached back out (to congratulate me for my sisters baby). Said he’s in a much better place mentally, wants to meet up. CONTd in comments

I’m turning 30 in a month. My boyfriend and I have talked about getting engaged but I’m not sure when he’ll propose (probably after the pandemic is over when we can go on trips safely). I’m realizing that if he waits until after the pandemic, it’s going to be at least a year until the actual wedding. Then I had always planned on being married for a few years before getting pregnant. I’m having major fertility anxiety. Any advice?
