If it’s other people on your team who are a higher rank than you, they’re probably part of this evaluation process as well. I don’t find that weird. To me it’s only weird if it’s someone who isn’t evaluating you (i.e. someone below you or same level).
It’s not as if your managers are unaware and it was purely from the sender lol, is what I’m saying. Depending on what it is, the manager was probably the one who told the higher ups.
Most partners copy managers on the emails to staff for two purposes: (1) to keep them in the loop of something they need to be aware of, and/or (2) as a warning shot of why am I having to deal with this.
And that may be your answer right there. The one email may have been telling the entire team that they were wrong. It’s much more efficient to send one email to the team then separate ones for everything.
If you want to share the email with us we may be able to offer more perspective but it is probably what KPMG 2 said
I do not care what anyone says. Feedback to adults should be given one on one unless it’s an intervention or you are a child. People make mistakes or are bad at their job, but trust and confidence is built when you respect folks. Also this particular leader is creating a divide and room for gossip by calling you out in front of everyone. You may have done something wrong but that leader did a bad job communicating.
Relax PwC 1. “Creating a divide and room for gossip by calling you out in front of everyone” actually just two managers. Jfc.
Not appropriate in most situations
That’s not feedback especially if it’s critical. They are calling you out.
Absolutely not. It won’t be feedback for you if the teams on it as well
I agree with PwC 1. I would even venture to say that the partner behaved unprofessionally and that you should discuss this with you performance manager and/or mentor.
Ha! Performance managers are like some sort of cruel joke. It seems like at my firm and practice line they are too busy or don’t care.
I guess it depends. Was it something that team has raised to the supervisor and needed to know it was addressed? Generally it does not seem appropriate.
When you say other members of the team, is that managers/directors/partners? Would find it strange and unprofessional if it’s other people in your level range/peers
If your an associate, and it was two managers copied then I personally do not think that is strange. Interested to see what others say.
I find at times other can learn also from an event so I keep it constructive but share with the full team
A partner ccing two managers on an email with feedback is not an issue. Reading through all your responses OP you just don’t seem to get it that since you’re a staff the partner will cc managers since they probably were the ones that talked to him or her. Your generation needs to stop finger pointing at everything that’s said to them as negative and or try to insinuate it’s inappropriate. An email that said you should not have done something is not berating you, get over yourself.
Way to classify one entire generation on the actions of a few. Let’s not even hit on the assumptions and judgement in your post. I hate hearing about my generation is this or that from people who are so far disconnected from my generation’s reality, it’s laughable. Seriously, stop, unless you want us to hate you. You and your generation are no better for being born in a different time with different societal factors.
Very appropriate. The fact is they've probably already talked to these people about the feedback they've given you. Also, it's not bad to own up to your weaknesses, own them, you can learn and grow sooner if they're addressed by yourself and those around you.
This is a dick move by the director. Feedback is meant to be given in a safe constructive way in private. I’d go to this individual and tell them that I don’t appreciate this type of public treatment and that if it continues I’m going to speak with the partner or HR about it. Not that I’d ever go to HR or the Partner but they need to know that behavior is not appropriate and that it can have consequences.
