I think it depends on 1. What the answer is on the first opportunity and 2. Which means more to you, alignment or financial status in the immediate future. Saying no to the latter doesn’t mean you’ll never have the opportunity to make that amount of money again, but it is giving you the opportunity to potentially make that amount or more in a role you feel more holistically aligned in. Then again, if you’re in a position where that extra money would really be useful then maybe take it for now and leverage that salary in negotiations when you find a new pivoting opportunity? Hope this helps friend!
Update since the app won't let me edit the original post : the headhunter for opportunitily number 1 has completely ghosted me. I've already done 2 rounds with opportunity 2 and they're setting up a tech skill scenario and are going to have it to me next week. The universe has sent me back to this boss for a 3rd time. I think it's telling me something 🤔🙌
I agree I think the universe may be telling you something - as long as you feel psyched, I recommend you go where you will feel people are excited to welcome you!
Sounds like (from my read) that your heart is with #1 but you are concerned that they haven’t gotten back to you yet and you don’t want to push their timing but that you are afraid #2 opportunity might disappear if you don’t act quick, and then you might be gambling on missing out on either offer - is this correct? If it is your concern, would you feel comfortable reaching out to #1 to explain that they are the job you are most interested in but you have another offer and you are inquiring about timing as part of your decision making?
Engineer - I empathize with your feelings of anxiety as a fellow job searcher but I think what you did is entirely appropriate - I mean, the whole job search is just yuck because it involves these awkward moments where we have to reach out to strangers with asks like this which determine the next few years of our professional lives. But they are used to fielding questions like this. If they should get back to you with a curt-toned email it may just be that they are having a bad day or replying to a string of emails and on autopilot or that they are not being a good ambassador on behalf of their company but I think you are proceeding in a perfect manner and I hope this works out.
You need to try to get offers from both. How likely do you think it would be that if you take #2 it would be easier to get a job like #1 after or if it would take you further down this current path?
They're actually diverging which is my dilemma. #1 is architecting a cloud migration for a large online presence, the other is architecting implentations of my current platform for the federal space. I really want #1 because it's a new skill set and a challenging role. I've done several massive platform migrations in the past and I actually enjoy them and want to learn something new for once.
Go with your gut. The 20k will really help you get paid well in the next role - but not if you're still having to move into a lower level because it's a shift. I think changing gears earlier is always better. But of course, if you really need the money then that's your journey. I just think if you really like the first, the money will find you eventually.
