Question. New staff that started in January. Needs help every time they do a return. Can’t follow simple instructions. Takes hours to walk them through how to prepare a return. Have shown them multiple times how to do so. How many times is too many times to help and see no improvement? Do I tell someone they aren’t learning or that they are struggling?

Sounds like a you problem

It's a gamble on your part. You can either figure it out to tell someone that this new hire isn't getting it. The gamble is if someone else says they are getting it. Then it just shows that you're unable to teach the staff below you.

Don't listen to Pwc1. I would maybe reach out to their counselor or manager first. See if they can talk to the staff about any underlying issues (whether its personal or work related)

I find it helps to explain the “why” of doing what you’re asking them to do, rather than just providing instructions or showing a walk through. Honestly it’s hard to say what the issue is here. There are staff that don’t catch on easily...and there are also staff and seniors who aren’t good at coaching/training others. Tax is difficult to both learn and teach. I would try to identify very specific items that they are struggling with, and consider telling someone higher up to come up with a game plan for training the person.

Discuss with the staff’s coach. If they work with other people these issues may already be known. If not, a change may help both of you - some people just don’t click. It’s not necessarily an indictment on either of you.

If they are all having the same struggles, maybe you are the problem.

It’s one staff. The others I work with do just fine

Speak with your manager, it’s not always the senior fault. Tons of staff of staff hide behind scared seniors. If this staff is truly not getting it, you’re probably not the only one dealing with it. Bring it up to your manager and let them take it from there. I encourage my seniors to talk to me about the staff they work it. There’s no reason to burn a senior out to save a non performing staff who will turn into a terrible senior.

Have you set expectations that they should be catching on to review comments and that they should not be making the same mistake twice? I’d also provide resources so they could learn more about their mistakes if necessary. New staff will need a lot of coaching, not just walking through something and hoping for the best.

like

In case it wasn’t clear, I am the one helping the new staff, not the new staff.

Do you just talk through the steps or do you send steps in an email? At the end of the day after you’ve helped them, do they eventually produce a good product at the end?

Thanks!

why can’t you help someone in less than an hour. I’d reexamine your teaching tactics

How to save money from monthly bills :
1) pay attention to auto and home insurance bills . The longer you stay with the provider, most likely your bill would go up . Since my wife and I are working from home for last 10 months , I was able to negotiate auto insurance bill and it’s now 30% less . 2 ) your wireless bill . Anytime you make changes , most likely your phone company will mess up your bill . Anytime they mess up, you can file complaint with FCC. My wireless company just issued me $300

Went from a big firm to work for a smaller firm. The people in the smaller firm are protective of their work and are good by their work too. I no longer feel chaos or stress. I am treated with respect and my schedule is more normal. I am even working more billable hours than before, but it feels like a seamless experience. I don’t work then past 5pm or anything out of the ordinary for this time of the year. I am so grateful!

KPMG reached out to me earlier this week and I’m interviewing for a tax position tomorrow morning. JD working on CPA. Working for a regional firm right now making $79k. I like it, but the benefits aren’t great.

Would anyone working in tax at KPMG recommend making the switch? What do your hours look like? Are you satisfied with the benefits?
