Question on tipping. For a hotel valet (~$40/day), how much should I tip each day? Should I tip when I drop off and also pick up? This is a long term project so I will be tipping them everyday.

Nothing, @$40 a day I expect the hotel to pay these guys a livable wage

likefunny

It’s a service industry job. They are likely getting paid below minimum wage with the expectation of tips. Whether or not you agree with the system is irrelevant. You should consider the price to be base+tip. If you can’t afford that, you should suck up the inconvenience of not using the service. Do you not tip at an expensive restaurant because you feel you’ve already paid enough?

like

Tip only at pick-up. I usually give $5 since it’s easier than dealing with singles, but $3 or $4 is also acceptable.

like

SBA1 - you’re a terrible person

like

To be clear, I do tip these guys most of the time, however, I can’t be expected to carry around wads of cash everywhere I go to tip people. At an expensive restaurant you add it to the bill, at a valet, you’re usually expected to tip in cash only.

like

How do you get rid of strip club $1s if you’re not tipping the valet?!

likeupliftingfunny

Lol SBA1 and others suggesting that prices are too high for tipping...that’s like saying the price of your steak is high enough that you expect the servers to be fine without a tip from you. If you can’t afford valet with the appropriate tip, park somewhere else.

like

@D1, I always tell them I don't need help. Who cares if they give you a dirty look

like

Tipping is optional. I would also be giving $0 if it was $40+ and no option to self park (And project expenses are tight). Otherwise, $2-3 if I have cash and charge to project

like

Tipping is a horrible customer experience

like

It depends on the state where the service is offered. At $40/day I would self park, in a nearby garage if I needed to. That’s an obscene valet fee and uber would likely be cheaper

like

Nah, that’s not how things work. At least a couple bucks is customary.

Same for bellhops, ~$2 a bag

If you don’t like that... park your own car, and carry your own bags 🤓

like

Accenture 1 - they aren’t a terrible person, that’s an okay thing to assume for that price
That being said agree with m1 for a few dollars at pick-up

SC1 IE would much rather carry my own bag but bell hops don’t always give you that option. I’m either forced to pay for a service I don’t want or I have to be rude and tell them I don’t need any help (I always get dirty looks if I do this)

I usually tip $2 when dropping off and $2 when picking up. Kind of annoying, but I go to the ATM at the beginning of each week for this exact purpose. Charge all the tips to the project.
