I don't think there is much you can do. It's not about someone gaming the system, it's about changing priorities once they have a child. They most likely intended to continue working but changed when they had their child. The fact that they even tried aprt time shows me a good faith effort
Thanks for weighing in - as a working parent, I certainly understand. Tough situation.
I'm not sure there's really much you can do to prevent this from happening. It happens with unpaid leave as well. People's priorities just tend to shift when they have a baby and that often involves making career changes. I think it's just par for the course, sadly.
