It really depends on what you’re solving for in your meeting. For instance, if you’re just starting in a new role or at a new firm or even just under new management, you’d be solving for something different than someone in a promotion year at the end of a 3 year tenure within the same company.
I’m going to make the assumption you’re someone who has an overarching goal of improving your performance so you can hit or exceed expectations for your role. If that’s, generically, pretty close, then the questions I would ask would be:
1) What does success look like in this role?
The answer to this will vary, but broadly this will give you the framework to emulate in order to achieve success. If nothing else, it should start a fruitful conversation.
2) With the aforementioned framework in mind, could you identify my strengths and areas of opportunities, as well as tactical ways for me to refine myself?
Here you would be looking for things like “you’re good at presentations; I would lean into interacting with clients more heavily and building your client hands overall” or, conversely “being more structured in your thinking could bring you value when attacking particular issues”. Try to get them to give you concrete steps or tasks to do so that you can close the gap - or at least track your progress as you attempt to close the gap.
3) Is there anything developmentally or otherwise that I should be thinking about for the next month that you would like to chat about?
This is an opportunity for your manager to really give you their broader take on the situation, you, the client, whatever. Maybe there is a lot of work in the pipeline or maybe not. Maybe this means your role will be different going forward or your hours will change. It’ll be good to try to get visibility there early so that you adapt and succeed.
Largely, I can’t find myself thinking of pointed questions to help you without deeper context but the above questions may drive the conversation to point where you find it more beneficial.
