Questions you regret not asking before accepting an offer to lateral as 5th/6th year?
I’m thinking I should ask info re: partnership, growth, etc. Exactly what questions though?

Need a bit more info:

1. Practice area?
2. Going to main office or branch office?
3. Do you want to be a partner someday?
4. Are you going to a firm that’s comparable to your current firm or a step up or down the vault rankings?

Excellent, TL1, thanks!

What class year you will come in as. How long to partner after that. How does selection for partner work. How will your salary increase and will it ever max out as an associate. Data re how often people make partner in that group. Expectations re bringing in clients. What are expectations for junior partners and what happens if other partners stop feeding you work because they don't want to share the profits with another partner. Do your due diligence.

These are all good questions. And prorated bonus is a big one, too. I'd add some questions about how work is assigned to senior associates, how much business you're required to develop if any, and what support for BD and marketing the firm provides. If it matters to you, discuss WFH flexibility. What are the nonbillable expectations, if any - writing articles, training juniors, etc?

Bonus eligible? Prorated?

Before, the hiring/managing partner should be able to answer. Asking after runs the risk of them saying something like they can’t retroactively adjust your offer but they’ll do it next year, etc.

I recently lateraled (3rd hear) into a biglaw firm from a clerkship just before the start of the fiscal year (Oct. 1). I’ve been out on a few matters and have worked on some clients, but this will be the second month in a row I’ve billed under 150 hours/month. I’ve been told by partners and associates to enjoy the lull but I can’t help but feel like I’m not being productive. I also feel like if I ask the partner or seniors for more work again it will genuinely annoy them. What should I do?

Man this Bowl is filled with some angry mid-levels. We get it, this job was hard for you, but it is for juniors now, too. Stop punching down.

I don’t think the juniors are entitled, they just want to share in their firms’ wealth. Surely any salary increases for the Classes of 2019, 2020, and 2021 would easily pay for themselves through billable hours.

I’m a lawyer based in Europe. I’m lateraling to a firm in a new jurisdiction on Monday and negotiated a decent pay increase a few months ago (new jurisdiction has significantly higher income taxes so negotiated based on a comparable net pay). My old firm has just announced it is increasing salaries by around 15% which will almost negate what I negotiated at new firm. New firm doesn’t review salaries till September. What are my options here so that I’m not out of pocket?

If your goal is to be as high ranking of an in house counsel position as possible, how would you structure your career progression? Is it better to stay in big law as long as possible and then transition as a partner, or is it more valuable to get relevant experience by going in house as a mid level/senior associate? Practice area is IP: working in patent pros, litigation, and tech transactional to varying degrees if that affects the answer.
