Quick poll for US citizens / GC holders. Based on current immigration rhetoric around H1b, I would like to ask if any of you felt your job was at risk / or were replaced by a cheaper H1b employee?

The reason I’m asking is that as an H1b I feel fairly compensated and treated by my current company. I don’t see a reason they have a jump through so many hoops to hire me if someone local was available easily. I don’t see a reason for such heightened scrutiny.

Of course this increases competition for jobs that havent been outsourced. Also anyone on H1B is going to less likely to quit easily until GC is received.

Strange question. Sounds like you’re complaining about the process. We should make it easier to get a H1B? Or are you really suggesting that we increase the H1B pool? We take in 85,000 H1B applicants a year (65,000 regular + 20,000 advanced degrees). That limit was reached in April.

Ex Indian IT employee here. And, this is the largest group of people I know in the States. Honestly, I don’t even know one who is paid below their LCA i.e. underpaid. While I can imagine that there are some who are underpaid, it’s not a prevalent practice for major Indian IT firms. Indian IT companies file H1bs for employees who are good at their job to a large extent i.e. you have to have extremely good ratings, make a case for yourself within the project. I have seen this in two major firms. The challenge begins with small scale consultancies. They exploit their employees to the max. At times, there are two or three layers of separation between the client and the employee. Employees don’t complain because a lot of them are not often up to the mark.

On a 1:1 you might be at par or more, but if you look at the number of jobs that move offshore, then it is a problem. None or most companies dont remove a bunch of us citizens or GC holders and replace all with h1bs unless the h1bs are having cutting edge skills and these jobs cant be moved offshore. Most h1bs are hired because of the large offshoring. So even if your pay is more than the local guy, the sum of the salaries of you and India folks is less than the sum of the us salaries. Thats how the comparison is and thats why everyone sees you taking their job. Just my observation. Btw, i was a recent visa guy, but now a GC. I chew these thoughts most days.

If you can find those many people to do the job in the first place. I have literally been on engagements where they offshored their entire Dev and testing team because they couldn’t set up a decent team here. In another engagement, the client team consisted of entirely GC holders or Americans as that was the rule. They tried to revamp their systems and within six months the team was full of H1bs. I am yet to see an American who can succinctly explain me the nuances of an OOP language and doesn’t make at least $90k.

Considering MBB offers here. Background = ~2YOE at tier 2 (think LEK/EYP/S&). I've heard and seen that McK experienced hires often do worse on average than BCG/Bain esp at junior levels and wanted to get some thoughts on how I should make my decision. Thank you!
