Rep for sure, unless you have an extremely large network that can support you. In my experience doing director searches I rarely if ever will be shown an unrepresented director from my producer.

That’s legit on the relationship with agencies. I think directors are often one step removed when there is a rep (I am one) involved. So it’s a different relationship than your example Of your cosmetics client. I don’t think that’s just you.

There is another option and that’s form relationships with multiple regional shops and remain independent. While you aren’t going to reach doing million dollar spots that way you could get in on multiple jobs with budgets in the $100k to $250k range. (Disclaimer I run biz dev for a regional prod co).

I am at a boutique firm and primarily work with two partners. With one I feel like I love what I do as I have autonomy, client contact and am not afraid to screw up. If that continued I can see myself staying at this firm for the long term. On the other hand when I work with the other, I am not in the loop on anything, feel like an idiot and wonder whether I’ll be around for long. To keep it short I am a non traditional 2nd year associate who was a non-atty in the same industry for 5 yrs prior.
