Quitting while pregnant? Anyone consider this?

Don’t do it! The mat leave at our firms is way too worth it!

OP - power through it and take your maternity leave. Once you are in it, you can reevaluate and decide what if/how you want to go back. There is something to be said for going back to a familiar company when you have a new baby. Starting over somewhere new takes a lot of work and brainpower, which there isn’t a lot of when you are in the world of an infant. If you are planning to stop working, then definitely wait until after maternity leave is over!

I didn’t for three reasons — 1) health insurance, 2) paid maternity leave, and 3) not having the pressure of ramping up at a new job while pregnant or having a new baby. If you have insurance covered via your partner’s plan and you are planning to take time out of the workforce, then I’m guessing it could be a different story

If this is a health related thing where you feel like you can’t do such a demanding job while pregnant, see if you can arrange a part time, internal role or leave of absence instead. Maternity benefits are quite generous if you do plan to stay in the workforce after the baby (and gives you time to decide if you’re on the fence). Unless you go to another firm with similarly generous benefits, often you won’t qualify for FMLA or paid parental leave within a year of employment.

My reaction: 😱😱😱
The maternity leave + PTO was really good here so why risk losing that?

To A1: I know several women (myself included) who struggled a lot with the workload while pregnant and needed to do part time or take leaves of absence to rest and get thru tough periods. Could definitely see wanting to quit if firm was not willing to be flexible about that or let us say no to very high burn projects.
Maybe OP will elaborate about her reasons but not impossible for this to be the case.

Accenture is not perfect - far from it - but I’m really surprised that your firms are not able to adapt to this situation. It’s really scary. I would then try to take sick days, short term disability etc. Still better than losing the coverage and options for mat leave to my opinion.

My thought is if you have an easy pregnancy, might as well work through a few more months and get the maternity benefits. If you have a difficult pregnancy, you’ll need the health insurance so instead of quitting, take short term leave. I know it’s tough to work through a pregnancy but unless you have another source of insurance and/or are independently wealthy, it doesn’t make much sense to me to quit now

Thank you. My heart is just not in it any more and I’m always tired. But I will power through it until I deliver.

You earned your mat leave girl! Take it!

Have definitely considered this but staying for all the reasons mentioned above

Just had my NIPT/Nuchal Translucency at 12w4d IVF pregnancy and the sonographer said everything looks fine but she wants me to come back in 5 weeks and then again a month later to do the scans again so she can get a clearer picture. She said baby is measuring slightly lower than it should, but it could be that doctors were a few days off on due date (is that a thing with IVF??). She also referred me to get a fetal echo at 20 weeks. Is this normal? I called OB, waiting for her to call me back.

I’m 31 weeks pregnant so everything makes me super emotional right now. I just overheard a co-worker basically brag that by the time he gets home every night his kid (3 year old) is already asleep. The thought of that made me cry. I really don’t want to get home every night to my kid already sleeping. When do attorney-parents find time to actually be with their kids?!?

Any moms or soon to be moms out there who are self employed/business owners? I stared a firm with three colleagues two years ago and am expecting my first child this spring. We are over the moon but I’m anxious about how I can manage this while not letting my career go down the drain. As a small business owner…maternity leave is not a thing. My husband will take a few weeks off but I’m nervous he’ll go back to work and it will be my career in the toilet. (I’ve expressed them to him!) Any tips?

My sister and brother in law are dealing with male factor infertility. My husband and I had our own infertility journey, so she shares a lot with me. They are Catholic, and he is firmly opposed to IVF, but a series of doctors have been clear that is their only option. While she is not opposed to adoption, she can't put aside the opportunity to be pregnant lightly, especially considering there is no indication of any issue on her side.
