Radical idea! When a candidate reaches out about a role, give them high level pointers how to improve their book when they’re not a fit instead of ghosting.

There’s a lot to unpack here.

First, let’s be clear. Ghosting is not the same as not getting a response when you first reach out. Ghosting is when there’s already a conversation (or more!) and they just stop replying. If you’re shooting your shot and nobody’s biting, that’s not ghosting.

Second, I only can agree with you if the candidate specifically asks for feedback. When you reach out, are you specifically asking for insight to what it takes to get into their agency? If not, I don’t see why they would or should give that kind of feedback.

Third, nobody owes anyone anything. Recruiters in this thread are saying feedback isn’t their job. They are 100% correct. Some may be willing to elaborate if asked. Appreciate it when that happens, but never expect it. Otherwise you will come off as arrogant and you will be disappointed. Go to portfolio reviews and reach out to creatives.

I actually find a lot of recruiters have no idea what actually makes for good work. There are a handful of recruiters I can think of who I think have a good grip on judging creative. The others might be great at making sure potential candidates won’t burn the place down and coordinating with the hiring CDs (very important skills, mind you), but they look for the most trivial stuff like “big brands,” “big network agencies,” and awards in portfolios. Which is why I tell students to reach out to senior creatives instead of recruiters. If your portfolio gets the thumbs up from a CD or above, then it doesn’t matter if the recruiter thinks your work sucks aka you didn’t win a Cannes at Droga.

You rock, copywriter 2! You are on point with all of your responses.

Listen to copywriter 2. That person is offering you SOLID advice on how you can get noticed and receive feedback on your book.

Recruiters are usually wildly understaffed, trying to hire for 15-30 high priority jobs and can receive 300-1,000 applications per opening. They can receive 50-100 messages a day from active candidates and people that are trying to get noticed. Plus they often have other projects they have to work on. I do my best to provide feedback when I can, but more often than not, I get pushback from the candidate on why they don't agree.

Recruiters are also given strict hiring guidelines and are usually seeking very specific experience and know where the flexibility is. Are you reading the job descriptions or paying attention to the agency you are applying to? or are you just applying to every job with a certain title? There are a million agencies out there - some are digital, some are 360.. my current agency won't talk to you if you don't have social-first experience (not experience where social was a component to a campaign). If a recruiter checked out your profile and didn't say anything to you, GUESS WHAT, YOU'RE NOT WHAT THEY ARE LOOKING FOR. Don't take it personally.

Instead of taking jabs at other professions, maybe focus on things that are actually in your control? You won't get very far playing the blame game. Listen to people like copywriter 2 that are offering you constructive advice. The ability to humbly receive constructive feedback will make or break your career kiddo. Interviewers and recruiters will screen candidates on their ability to receive feedback.

Feedback has to be desired to even have a chance of being useful. Even then, it can be hard to accept and is coloured by the opinion of the provider, anyway. Most Recruiters do not have the time in their schedule to spend on such a dubiously valuable activity.

Do you know how far south that conversation can go — “high level pointers” coming from a recruiter? Not everyone is open to receiving that.

The alternative is still getting burned and looking rude when you ignore.

Just take the L and move on, rejection is the only constant in this biz

Different agencies and no screenings. Book is good enough. Manager believes I work well above my level. Don’t have a reliable network though.

I don't want feedback on my book from a recruiter, who more often than not barely knows anything about our craft

Copywriter 2 is spot on in his response. As a creative recruiter, I will just add, Oh how we wish we had time to give everyone feedback! About their work, about how it was received, everything. That would really make most of us so happy to be able to do and really be able to help coach candidates along. There’s just so little time, and so many people we would like to be able to focus on. I could let myself get distracted all day every day with portfolio feedback, suggestions for how to market themselves, etc. But then I’d be lousy at actually recruiting, which is what companies hire me to do, and how I earn a living. So for me, it’s a balancing act. How to be sufficiently successful at both. Which means, never enough of either one.
