That! You’re a first year for 16 months at my firm until January (17 months later) when you get your first raise and when the real first year starts for the folks who just started.
I go based on my work experience and history. Due to a miserable job, I left my first position without my second lined up. It was 6 months at job one, two and a half years at job two, so I started job three as a fourth year in my mind, and 15 months later I’m a 5th year (with a quarter of that under my belt).

First firm counted by bar admission year, which punished me for having to retake once. Current firm counts by graduation year, though a couple clients still raise a minor stink about admission year.
Based on when you started working

Based upon when I started working and then I “move up” when I get my yearly raise in January. So I would say you’re a second year.

Attorney 1, I'd say being a law clerk as opposed to a judicial law clerk doesn't count.
