I would rather be fired. And I’m saying that as someone who was recently fired.

Partner seeing OP on Zoom:

I love this 😂😂 no but seriously people tend to go with the familiar, so when they see your face you’re a person to then instead of a name on a list. Same reason BS presenteeism in the office seems to get people promoted or makes them look harder working than they are. I’m not going to the office except my assigned days because eff that and I’m leaving right at 6, but if I’m slow and need work, my camera is on 😂 same reason when I’m swamped with work camera goes off because I don’t want to be picked
I’m just imagining OP being the only person on a zoom/teams call with their camera on, just looking intently at his or her own reflection.

Nah. I’m very good at texting without looking so best believe I’m texting 😂

ROFL. I’m never on camera in house. But when I was at a firm (during pandemic) I was always on camera. Wtf wrong with ya’ll 😂 so adorable

I like to have the camera on except when I am running late and the drying hair and putting on make-up has not happened yet.

But then I can’t treat the non-billable internal meeting as a cute lil podcast while I scrub dishes and fold laundry?
I have had mentors who are rainmakers in the firm make this point to me, so it definitely matters to some partners.
With that said, it also caused a rift with the same mentor when they didn't accept that I sometimes (usually) wasn't going to turn on my camera if it wasn't with a client or court. An absurd thing to cause a rift but I tried to explain my reasons and it felt like it fell on deaf ears and the lack of respect towards my judgment about what works best for me on internal calls, really bothered me coming from someone I otherwise think very highly of.
With that said "more work" is probably the last thing I'm looking for.

I’m swamped at the moment, but there were slower moments. I’ve noticed a lot of people in this bowl are worried about layoffs/stealth layoffs and just wanted to share an observation. I turned on my camera on zoom sometimes because I’m new and didn’t know what the office culture was like yet. I’ve noticed that on days I do, I get far more requests from partners and counsels and seniors to do work. I finally put two and two together and thought I’d share what I’ve noticed for anyone who’s worried about layoffs due to being slow and wants their hours 😊
