/rant. My manager loves giving me work and telling me this won’t take long, yet every time it involves digging out some one else’s work (who has left the company), understanding and debugging complex models myself (lots of trace precedents / trace dependents ) and then building something further. If I don’t do the leg work in understanding the models, my forecasts will be off. But this is not simple nor quick. Why do they love saying it is ? They have come from the bottom up they know the job.

When he says “this won’t take long”, he means it won’t take long for him to tell you what he thinks he wants. He does not care how much of your time it will take that weekend and the ones after.

I swear! You’re onto something!

Ask for a number. For example, you can ask if they estimate it will take 1-2 hours. From there, you can review the work and go back to them with support as to why it may take closer to 20 hours.

Yes I’m realizing now I need to start projects right away if only so I can go back to them with why they will need longer.

like

Are you me? The tasks given take longer to explain than actually performing them and you constantly run into complete changes from prior year with zero guidance. Then, an hour and a half later they're asking, "are you done?"

Afterwards you explain what's going on and they give you some haphazard explanation that doesn't make sense and expect it done to perfection in 30 minutes.

Oh brother

Omg this is me too!😭 my manager loves to say, “this should only take 15 minutes” when there’s no universe where this would be the case! I’m a competent person and whenever o here this it’s at least a 2hr project, sometimes days if there are complications. Like wtf how do they misestimate that much it drives me insane bc I have to go back to them and explain why it’s taking longer and they always look disappointed in me and their expectations weren’t remotely reasonable to begin with

You should 100% download the Arixcel excel plug-in. Like $30 for a year and it’s the best shortcut ever for tracing formulas and understanding models you’re unfamiliar with. Use CTRL + Q all day

Yeah, I googled it after posting my question. Gonna make a business case to get it installed.

To con you into doing it. This job is all about self interest, in every single interaction.

like

Take as much time as you need because at the end of the day when the task takes forever and blows up the client code and it’s not profitable then relish in that

Just explain why it takes longer and give frequent updates.

Twisting the knife, eh?

A lot of managers have no idea how the processes work and how long stuff takes..

I love my wife and I love my two kids. But all we do lately is bicker and fight about how the kids have terrible sleep habits and she doesn’t want to do anything about it, and it’s eating away at our marriage. Today was the worst Valentine’s Day I’ve ever had. Our intimate life is struggling because we never ever get alone time. Again, I love my kids more than anything, but some times I just miss how simple life was when we didn’t have children. Anyone here gone through this and have advice?

I have a desk job where I’ll legit sit for 9hrs each day. I used to have hobbies on the computer, like video editing, writing code for side projects, sketching out app ideas. Lately I can’t stand to be at my desk anymore after work. Been watching too much tv instead. More so seems like it’s due to being in the same location for so many hrs each day. Interested in hearing thoughts about separating work desk from personal desk, and other hobbies you picked up to get away from the screen
