Dismissive men will be the same in any industry, regardless of a supposed "higher purpose". Nonprofits do tend to skew towards a more female workforce, but tech is usually male heavy even in nonprofits (esp depending on which team you're on).
Instead of focusing on an industry, I'd ask diversity questions when you're job searching and keep the industry open. i.e. How diverse (gender, race, ethnicity, background, etc) is my team and the leadership ladder to the CEO? If there aren't any females in leadership positions, huge red flag.
The problem with nonprofits is that it’s just white women doing the same thing that white men do in the tech space. As someone who’s been a nonprofit let me tell you it’s not any better plus the pay is mediocre over here.
Sounds to me that your confidence is the real issue here. I’m African with an accent so I have the quadruple whammy (woman, WoC, African, accent). The first thing you need to do is stop embodying someone else’s bad behaviour and walk in your strength. Speak up; speak intelligently; speak confidently; and put your head down to deliver. They won’t dismiss you. In fact, you will get to dismiss them!
Yes Technical Lead 1 I am thinking I should work for myself. Being in this position for long time so definitely time to move on just need to find the right route
D1 thanks Not about the confidence level. I am where I am right now because I have the skills and the confident of my knowledge. I am just tired that even after I am being at my level, it’s still happening. I’m Asian and yes I have an accent.
Completely understand that. The only way to combat that is showcasing your expertise/results, being confident when speaking, and not being afraid to be assertive when someone pushes back/talks over you
If you’re on your way out, or thinking of switching jobs, start calling these guys out. What do you have to lose! Tell them about themselves. Assert your expertise. You’re there for a reason, because you have the skills, education, etc. tell them directly to stop dismissing you. Your opinion is just as valid as there’s. SAY THAT. See how they respond.

Those kind of men will be in every company.
I’d ask myself - do I have the energy to create a new culture? Or can I right now only handle a safe culture? If the latter, choose a company where you already see WOC in leadership (esp in tech) roles.
They're everywhere. Sometimes I wonder what it would be like to work for a woman-only company or start up. Or at least women-run or women-centered? Just would be cool to be thought of as a person in the workplace without having to constantly reassert myself!!
HOnestly....you'll find this everywhere. I don't know what it is. Every place I have been had men like this.
Depends on the non profit! Small non profits would prolly be a different shift in culture and operations— meaning you’ll be doing multiple jobs at once. Pay might be low too
