Reached Paris and exchanged money at the airport. Decided to spread out the money/cards once at hotel. Wallet stolen on the train from airport. The guys are in the train with me and I can’t do.......

Sorry this happened to you. But upon doing some research, pretty evident that pickpocketing is more rampant in Europe (eg you don’t see it much in the US these days). I lived in Paris for 2 years and would not take the train with cash on me. I’d prefer taking a cab from CDG anyway (line can be long though) but I wouldn’t shlep my luggages in the RER. Also, most people understand English or would be willing to help if you start interacting by saying “bonjour, desole de vous deranger mais je ne parle pas francais. “ having practiced basic intro sentences in your host non English foreign country is a must when traveling. Once you arrive at your station, you can alert the gendarmes or the train safety guards. Good luck!

If you have an AMEX platinum card they’ll wire you money for free (and have other ways to get money to you in an emergency). AMEX should also be able to produce cards for you on the spot in AMEX offices and other card issuers can get you a card in a day or two. Suggest in the future keeping your wallet in your front pocket, not carrying much cash (you get fleeced exchanging money, better to take money out an ATM or use credit cards), and keeping some credit cards in your suitcase. Also keep photos of your credit cards, including the CIDs, in your phone. Any chance you have ApplePay set up on your phone? Or have credit card details saved so you can enable ApplePay? Contactless is quite common in Europe and you can use ApplePay on almost any contactless terminal.

I hated Paris. Was hit with so many racist and xenophobic people and I will probably never go back. I also was robbed.

It depends on an area. Yes Paris can be pretty rough.

If you know the two guys, shout at them make a scene. I was once pick pocketed in Madrid. Similar scenario. It took some guts but I started shouting at those folks. They just returned my wallet. In a train I would say you would be pretty safe

I’m so sorry this happened to you. Many people in Paris do speak English (albeit not very good at times) so you’re not completely helpless.

Paris can be rough around the edges but it’s a beautiful city with amazing things to do and see. You need to be careful of pick pockets not just in Paris but all major cities in Europe (Rome is even worse). I never carry large amounts of cash with me and always hide my phone, wallet, etc when I’m on the metro and RER. I’ve also seen them snatch people’s phone and run off the train when the doors are closing, so be careful of that. Try to blend in as much as possible and be careful of your surroundings.

I recently lived in Paris for a year without speaking French, so if you have other questions or need any tips, let me know.

anything. There’s no police, no one understands English, and the locals don’t want to help. Now I’m left with no money.

I’m so confused, what does spreading your money/cards out at the hotel have to do with being robbed on the train?

Paris is beautiful, I’ve been many times. Just keep your wits about you and don’t dress like a tourist. Sorry this happened to you, OP. Cancel your cards and get money wired to you.

The basic premise of all this is Paris is in France. Which explains many, many things that people experience there. Sorry OP

GT, the language is one and the same, except for accents and local idioms. However culturally we are quite different given our history and particular place/status in North America.

Call your credit card company and see if they can’t help you out.

Spent the summer in Paris - nobody will help you if you start out speaking English, you have to try to speak with bonjour or something then they might entertain you as a human to talk to. (So rude). Paris is extremely well known for pickpocketers. Always always be aware of your belongings there, tip for future. I kept my over shoulder purse infront of me and hand on it at ALL times. Sketchy people everywhere there trained to target tourists.

Did you get outrightly robbed? How’d you know the guys are still on the train?

Yes, one guy stopped me from the front and the other from behind. It’s so lawless here. People are literally jumping over turnstiles and getting in without buying tickets and I can see it getting recorded on the cctv in the service room. The lady working there isn’t saying or doing anything.
