Real talk: does anyone else find all the bragging about super high billable hours kind of sad? There is more to life and it just reads like life not being lived. 😔

Agreed. There’s a very toxic culture around it, like “you’re not entitled to feel stressed/tired/overwhelmed because this one time this other person billed more numbers.” Also feel like it compromises actual efficiency imo, there’s no way those crazy numbers reflect actual productive useful work. For what it’s worth the working parents in my group are absolute machines and some of the most efficient people I’ve ever worked with. Their ability to set and stick to firm boundaries during certain hours/days makes me feel empowered to get the hell out once I’ve gotten my work done for the day and not drag out the timer. We should all be “bragging” (level setting?) more about the ability to have a life sometimes...

It’s very sad! It’s definitely hard not to get sucked into the pressure but I just remind myself that I have little ones that need me far more. There are a lot of associates (less vocal) that do not even meet billable hour requirements so if you are meeting the requirement and have an outside life, I think that is pretty much being a superhero!

like

It is sad but it is also very easy to get sucked into that pressure and perpetuate the cycle...over the years it’s been harder and harder for me to not let that mentality take over, even though I know it’s harmful and not a reflection of one’s quality work, productivity, or worth. Especially when it’s so tied to bonuses etc.

Associate 4, does your firm have a reduced target option? I went that route and it was pretty great. You know you can get to the target and you can have that flexibility to be more available to your kids. Yes, pay cut, but I found it to be the best option and you can keep your job and client relationships that you've built.

like

Yes! I reduced my hours a couple years ago and am so glad I did. I think there’s a certain amount of brainwashing that goes on in law school and law firms about long hours that’s not necessarily tied to productivity (much less health). Think about your worth and priorities and what you really want out of life, and see if you can find ways to structure your career accordingly.

So, I’ve heard pros and cons for going reduced hours. Those who have/have not, can you explain why/why not?

Never experienced that.

I’m thankfully hitting my hours, but my firm keeps passing non-billable work my way. I am grateful for the opportunities, but this type of work always seems to find its way to the female associates at my firm. We have been told that non-billable work is irrelevant in terms of our annual hours. Any tips on how to navigate this in a thoughtful way? I want to be a team-player, but I believe that others need to step up to the plate.

Need advice for resigning while on bench. I already have a start date with the new employer. Should I do a traditional two week notice or give <=1 week notice instead? My goal is to not burn bridges, but I also don’t want to get let go on the spot since I have nothing to “wrap up” besides HR tasks. I’ve read on here that sometimes they will let you go day of and pay you out for two weeks but I don’t see why any firm would do that for somebody not currently performing billable work...

I’m a 2017 associate in NYC biglaw. I logged approx. 2300 billable hours in 2019. Is that light, normal or heavy in the biglaw market for RE associates at my level? Thanks in advance for thoughts.

Anybody switched from plaintiff to defense later in their career? If so, which did you prefer? Also, I’ve done plaintiff work my entire career - outside of billable hours, in your experience what are some frustrations/challenges that are unique to the defense side? I’m a 10 year attorney looking at some defense jobs right now and they seem a lot more stable with more upward mobility than anything I’ve experienced at a plaintiff firm. Thanks in advance for any comments offered.

[1/2] Hi all, I apologize because I know there have been posts on this bowl with similar subject matter recently, but I really need advice. I am at a risk of losing my job at the end of this month if I don’t make some changes to my work performance, specifically meeting my monthly billable hour requirement. My work and my work product is not an issue - my partner has repeatedly commended me on everything I produce, but my billable hours are seriously lacking.

Just got into a full time grad program for international affairs that starts in January of 2021. (completely changing careers). I need to stay working at my firm until then and possible after to get the billable hours for my CPA. I passed all 4 exams and I refuse to give let that go to waste...... how do I tell my employer I'll be going to school in a way that they'll still let me work part time? Extremely nervous they're just going to let me go.

I’d love some help thinking through this. I’m currently renting for $1600 base ($1800 total) and live in the least desirable part of town, and expect it to raise to about $2k/month. I was planning to buy my first property in the city and Airbnb part of it, but it will take me about a year to save up the cash (~$500k starting). Eventual goal is to move more rural but trying to build to FI. I found a property in my ideal dream location for $280k but it needs work, and can’t Airbnb it. Continued
