Real talk: does anyone else find all the bragging about super high billable hours kind of sad? There is more to life and it just reads like life not being lived. 😔

Agreed. There’s a very toxic culture around it, like “you’re not entitled to feel stressed/tired/overwhelmed because this one time this other person billed more numbers.” Also feel like it compromises actual efficiency imo, there’s no way those crazy numbers reflect actual productive useful work.

For what it’s worth the working parents in my group are absolute machines and some of the most efficient people I’ve ever worked with. Their ability to set and stick to firm boundaries during certain hours/days makes me feel empowered to get the hell out once I’ve gotten my work done for the day and not drag out the timer. We should all be “bragging” (level setting?) more about the ability to have a life sometimes...

It’s very sad! It’s definitely hard not to get sucked into the pressure but I just remind myself that I have little ones that need me far more. There are a lot of associates (less vocal) that do not even meet billable hour requirements so if you are meeting the requirement and have an outside life, I think that is pretty much being a superhero!

It is sad but it is also very easy to get sucked into that pressure and perpetuate the cycle...over the years it’s been harder and harder for me to not let that mentality take over, even though I know it’s harmful and not a reflection of one’s quality work, productivity, or worth. Especially when it’s so tied to bonuses etc.

I don’t know if I can stay on this hamster wheel through having kids.

Associate 4, does your firm have a reduced target option? I went that route and it was pretty great. You know you can get to the target and you can have that flexibility to be more available to your kids. Yes, pay cut, but I found it to be the best option and you can keep your job and client relationships that you've built.

Yes! I reduced my hours a couple years ago and am so glad I did. I think there’s a certain amount of brainwashing that goes on in law school and law firms about long hours that’s not necessarily tied to productivity (much less health). Think about your worth and priorities and what you really want out of life, and see if you can find ways to structure your career accordingly.

So, I’ve heard pros and cons for going reduced hours. Those who have/have not, can you explain why/why not?

Never experienced that.

I just started at a new firm 3 months ago. A big jump for me with 1,800 billable hours. I feel like I’m drowning trying to make the hours :( I am exhausted at the end of every day. Does it get easier?

I wonder what the hourly billable rate of this fire drill is... 🤔

Y’all. The past 3 months I’ve been really going through it mentally it’s been up and down. I had my breaking point last night and it feels like today I can’t even think about work. I know where most of this is coming from. I recently started therapy about 2 months ago and It’s been really eye opening and helpful but also it’s been extremely hard to learn certain things and patterns about myself. I had a really bad breakdown last night. And curious how therapy has helped you

Can someone put light on work culture and work life balance in aws bangalore team. Specially aws migrations teams. Got an offer and planning to join there. However worried about wlb based on the feedback over internet

Graduating from part-time MBA in May, have been working as a product manager in tech for 2 years and prior to that 5 years in BI/data analytics. I’m at a new company now and I’m disliking PM more every day. I’m thinking about doing JIT recruiting for investment banking to get strategic finance jobs in tech in 1-2 years but we’re having a baby in August. Is it stupid to try to pull off a pivot like that? I value WLB and want to be able to take paternity leave when our daughter is born

How is the Culture and WLB for a senior manager at Reliance Platform in Navi Mumbai Location?

Joined a new company in industry after being laid off from my last job after being there for only 5 months. My new gig is rough, no support network, my boss is not a very nice guy and I dread this new job every day (2 months in). Things aren’t going to be getting better and I’ve almost thrown my mouse at my wall out of frustration with the job/boss.

Is it too early to leave? Bad idea just go get up and quit? Planning on moving back home with my parents so I wouldn’t have to dip into savings

Has anyone moved from MBB to investment team in PE and regret it? I hear the work as an associate could be more tedious and WLB worse

Hi all,

Do firms match offers from other Big 4s for campus hires? I’ve received a campus offer from both
KPMG and EY. I’m more interested in the EY offer, but they are paying 3k less than KPMG.

Would it be a bad move to let them know about the other offer and try negotiating? I feel it wont make a difference in the long run, but at the same time I don’t want to leave any money on the table if possible.
