Yes - any leave of abscence will hurt you in a promotion year.
Being out if the market means you generate lower sales, biz development and billings. Out of site and out of mind is also a reality.
I'm sure it could if your leader was a dick. Of course if it was obvious you could pursue legal action.
I've seen it happen, yes it can.
Your leader doesn't have to be a dick either.
It is numbers and performance and also time and exposure.
There are always potential work/life balance tradeoffs
Yes. Kid 1 impacted me going for Sr Mgr bc I lost a critical year (4 months leave) to prepare. Now planning kid #2 and really pushing for the promotion this year. It's tough.
I personally have not seen it with women counseled out for not getting promoted to manager in ~3yrs. I think it's important you communicate your career and personal goals when the time comes.
I was promoted to manager while on maternity leave. It depends on your relationships and how well you set yourself up the year prior IMO.
True -- just sucks that it's such a fraught topic that I can't have an adult conversation at work about what those trade offs are.
^the work will always be there and it never ends. Boundaries people.
@PWC1 Especially concerned that up or out model leaves little room for error. Glad you're trying to make it work. Have you seen other women counseled out?
Thanks! Good to hear
@PWC2 Awesome. Doing well so far, really like my practice, getting great feedback, so hoping that could be the case if it comes down to it.
I'm a woman and I was counseled out.
I've seen women go out though and come back a lot different - both ways.
I've seen women come back and just turn into terminators and just get more efficient and effective with new motivation.
I've also seen women come back and seem checked out. They had more travel limitations, weren't always willing to put in the hours, couldn't stay weekends if necessary, etc.
People care about your life personally but the work has to get done. If its you versus someone more dedicated and committed, the more dedicated person will win.
@PWC3 From where to where? What level were you?
