Real Teacher looking for a real answer. Does PBL work?? What does work in your classroom? Teaching and students have changed so much over the last 25 years.

I have had great experience with this. In one of my courses we learn about the family and community (foreign language class). The culminating project is for the students to organize from start to finish a community outreach event. They have to plan it all in the target language and I am only there to supervise. They take guests who they’ve invited from our district on tours, do presentations to share information about the school, and also earn service hours for this. It is an incredible event and they learn a great deal. It also helps strengthen the relationship between the school and the community

PBL works when it is approached holistically throughout the school—supported by school structures like “families”/“houses”, when the 6 R’s (Steinberg (1997). Real Work, Real Learning) are implemented with fidelity, when they are well-planned and well-structured, etc. PBL works when administrators and teachers want to do the work to make it happen and recognize that the status quo is not good enough. It can’t just be a buzzword thrown around by districts and school leaders.

I have tried PBL and have pushed it to work right before holidays. A sorta academic project to shake things up when they are starting to go haywire. I know they won’t put much effort in. It sadly becomes busy work right before a holiday.

When you say work, you mean do students learn material? I have had success with PBLs. A criticism of PBLs is they focus too much on fluff and not substance. If that’s the case, they won’t work so well for learning. We have ELA teachers in our building who have wonderful PBL units developed and the learning and quality of the product produced is outstanding. Like many things, decide what your purpose is, decide how true learning will be demonstrated, and design the PBL from there

It depends on the age and maturity. My juniors impressed me with their 20% time projects. I also had a student choice novel that most did well on. They had to make a website for the novel and most turned out well. Their favorite project was the life skills project where they had to learn a life skill and teach it to their classmates. It is easier for English than some other classes, though

We have PL and PBL and our students perform at or better than their peers not in those programs.
