Realizing I lowballed myself moving to a big city from a smaller one in terms of salary. Now I’m up for a promotion... but average salary for that is 40k more - do I dare ask?! Or am I screwed?

Yeah that’s gonna be tough. Hell, even a raise of 10% of your current salary is tough to get. My best success of pulling this off is actually getting an offer elsewhere and saying “hey guys, this other place wants to pay me my market value”. But of course you’d have to get that offer and actually be willing to leave if your current job doesn’t pay up.

like

Screwed. Hop to another agency. It’s the truth, sorry to say.

likesmart

You don’t get it. That’s the worst

like

This just happened to me. Got the offer for the promotion today actually. Unfortunately, they know what you make. Now I love my job and this promotion means a great deal to me, so I’ll take my 14.5% “ceiling” raise and just try to make up the cash at end of the year raise discussions. Which doesn’t work, but let me dream. I’ve decided to be thrilled with my new job and title and team and stfu and remember that $$$ isn’t everything. I’ve made more at other jobs and hated the company so... what’s it worth to you? That’s really all that matters

like

Other question though: what’s the worst thing that could happen if I ask for a big raise?

like

It’s not impossible. I’ve seen it done before, and done it myself. But you have to have clearly demonstrated that you’re worth the raise by going above and beyond up to this point, not just average, otherwise it’s a no go.

like

Did the same as you. Jumped jobs in order to make up some of the difference, and still think I could have asked for more .

Considering leaving Bain with 2 years in SM role, HSW MBA, and 11 years since undergrad. Google role is non-technical Cloud Strategy. Unsure of title or level at this point - called "lead" but contact indicated flexibility. Would be remote in a non-SF/NY location. Mgr indicated it was technically an individual contributor role though I would be managing 2 people. What comp/level should I expect (Assuming L6?)? What is the significance of the IC role if I'm technically managing 2?

Hi all - I’m working as a Jr AE at a remote agency. Before full-time at this agency, I interned there for 2 years and often did pro-bono work. I love my company so much, but I often feel stuck when it comes to salary and growth. The salary is minimum wage and every time I ask about a raise they agree I need one but never get around to it. Today, I was offered a position at another agency as a remote AE with more than double my current salary. I didn’t seek this job out but don’t know what to do.

You started at a new role/company 2 months ago that is +50% your previous TC, a level promotion, and you’re happy with the team and scope. However you’re also currently in a long distance relationship with a SO you love and have been with for 4 years. The relationship is starting to crack and moving abroad to be with her seems like the best decision to kee the relationship. How would you play this out sirs/maams? Ask manager to work abroad and quit if they reject it? Thx for the feedback 😔

I'm an entry level consultant in Dallas at a smaller company. This is my first job in consulting and I've been here about 7 months. My experience has been good in terms of work life balance, autonomy, and culture. My only real issue is my compensation. I was happy with it at first, but with the workload and expectations I'm feeling undervalued. My base is 82k, 5k signing bonus, no annual bonuses or anything. Im wondering if I should start looking elsewhere or if I'm just getting greedy

Hi ladies. I need some advice. I'm currently out on maternity leave, to return in about a month. I was just informed my male counterpart in my department will be getting a promotion by our new boss. This is really a slap in the face considering I've been trying to fight for equal pay since last year when I found out another (former) male counterpart of mine was making 40k more than me. What would you do in my situation? Demand to know why I wasn't considered? Leave?

Big tech or consulting? Which do you prefer as a career and why? I realize this is really general. I’m interviewing with Accenture and Amazon and the opportunities and career trajectory or so wildly different. This would be my entrance into consulting and concerned that if I wait too long, consulting would be a pay cut without prior consulting experience. It’s already looking like a financially lateral move but high potential. Vs tech is a big jump financially but different career direction.

After your first job, how relevant is GPA. For context, I went to a school that is very well known for grade deflation (Deloitte had a “suggested” minimum of 3.2 here) and I studied statistics, a particularly rough major at the school. Long story short, GPA was between a 2.9 and 3.0. This wasn’t due to slacking and I’ve done well at Deloitte so far with plenty of experience to speak to. Would my GPA still block me from certain firms, like any of the MBB firms or a Tier 2 consulting firm?
