Reallllly trying to cut back on drinking. I don’t have a problem, but the frequency at which I drink is starting to scare me. It’s now been 5 days which feels like a lifetime. How do I keep strong?

Ahh i feel like this is very common in consulting! I noticed I was drinking almost daily with coworkers and happy hours and weekend with friends, at lounges before flights, etc. so I took a full month off of drinking

First, I’m trying to not drink alone, even if it’s just “a glass of wine with dinner” or a drink before a flight at a lounge. Yes they’re free but are the really necessary?

Second, I’m alternating alcoholic drinks with regular drinks, maybe first a beer and then a la croix or seltzer, etc

Third, three drink max with coworkers. I feel it’s soo easy to slip into one drink and then another etc at happy hours or corporate events, and honestly, nothing good comes from drinking a lot with coworkers

TLDR: stop drinking alone even if the drinks are free, alternate with non alcoholic beverages, and be mindful of consumption when around coworkers

Oh man I am so on board with this!

First, I agree with the above comment that cutting the drinking alone is key. Instead of saying, “I won’t drink this week or today” ... maybe it’s, “I won’t have a drink this hour”

Also, don’t beat yourself up about it if you do have a glass of wine or two with friends!

I cut out drinking alone and drinking on flights and that really helped. What ultimately worked was giving it up when I started trying to get pregnant. I’m now four months pregnant and do miss it sometimes. I love spindrift and drink it out of a wine glass...somehow that makes me feel better

My last team did team group fitness team events vs going out to a bar (eg Barry’s, soul cycle etc). The guys got to be competitive and I wasn’t forced to drink beer on a school night.

Thank you - this is helpful and also reassuring to hear I’m not the only one struggling! I used to never drink alone..only with friends. But after switching to Consulting I found I 1) drink alone quite often (ie in airports, on planes) and 2) end up drinking way more than I intended when out for a casual night with coworkers. I’m young-ish, so sometimes I feel the managers/partners expect the young people to be the lively ones...

This is a really good topic. I was going out a lot a few years ago and I didn’t realize how much it was effecting my work (and life) until I decided to give it up for lent. And let me tell you, after 30 days without any alcohol in your body, you realize not only how much better you feel, but how you’ve been doing yourself a disservice all these years by showing up at 50% in every aspect of your life (work, relationships, etc.) when you’re easily capable of showing up at 100% just by taking care of yourself.

I’ve slowly integrated alcohol back into my life, but my rule is 2 drinks max. More than 2 becomes a slippery slope for me and honestly I’ve wasted too much of my time on late nights with people who don’t have any real value in my life.

🙌🏼. Good job! I felt like superwoman when I did Whole30 and I know it was b/c of no alcohol.

It will be 1 year come Labor Day that I came to the realization that alcohol was completely unnecessary in my life. I don’t drink alcohol anymore and don’t miss it one bit.

I needed to hear that I am not the only one struggling on this. The drinks with co-workers has gotten out of hand on my end. I just don’t stop. 2nd glass seems to be the gateway. Then I have 2-3 more. Then I sleep horribly and can’t focus the next day. And say I’ll rein it in next time and then it happens again! Also recently went out with a guy who was a heavy boozer and I felt like i had to keep up. I like the idea of no alone drinking (but how nice is a glass of wine with a laptop working dinner at a bar), water/other between drinks, and a limit with coworkers.

One of my main issues is co-dependency with feeling like I’m somehow disappointing people who want a drinking buddy or who are used to me joining in on sharing wine at work dinners. I know that sounds ridiculous.

I feel exceedingly better when I keep it to 2-3 drinks or none at all.

I’m in my 40s 🤪

I have always disliked how much social pressure there is to drink, at work functions or in other social settings. Honestly sometimes I dread going to events if I feel that there may be expectation to drink, and sometimes I just don’t go.

A few things I do:
- I track calories for my weight. Then it becomes very obvious very quickly that it’s not worth it to drink those empty calories that I need to work extra hard to burn
- I remind myself that my health and my wellbeing comes first. Drinks may be free, but insomnia, weight gain and liver problems are not
- I tell myself “if you need alcohol to be fun, then you are not really that much fun”. I’ve been able to enjoy parties and girls nights just fine even though I may be the only one not drinking. (But I also don’t feel the need to be the center of entertainment. If I really want to, I feel that there are other ways)
- I am lucky that I hang out with a lot of smart, fun non drinker or light drinker friends outside of work

Ultimately, I think what really helped me is to get comfortable in my own skin.

Create a new habit. I liked the ritual of getting home every evening and grabbing a bottle of wine and going back and forth from the living room to the kitchen during commercials to pour a new glass. I created a hot tea ritual instead. A second ritual - instead of stopping by the wine store on the way home, I walked to my neighborhood garden to check the vegetables.

I had the same issue only I noticed I was starting to get addicted. My drinking got so bad it started to affect my professional and personal life. I’m happy to say the person I am today isn’t the person I was 6 years ago but it took a lot of discipline. I cut my drinking down to only certain days of the week, embraced life style changes that would discourage drinking I.e. sugar free diets, and activities that would discourage drinking such as pursuing my MBA. These techniques helped me take control of drinking but it takes time to find out what works for you. Best of luck with your journey!

I stopped going out to events where drinking is the primary activity. It’s too easy to go from “I’ll just have one and go home” to “well, everyone seems bummed that I’m leaving early” to “ok, sure, one shot can’t hurt...” I still drink and I still go out, but I go to dinner or a concert or the theater or something where drinking isn’t the focus. I’ve found that people I thought were decent friends were actually just drinking buddies, and others who I thought were just drinking buddies were looking for the same kind of “out” that I was. It’s a little lonely sometimes, but I feel a lot better, both physically and emotionally.

^My life - good job BAH1 💪🏼

Lateraled as a first year about 6 weeks ago. I’ve only been hitting a max of 30ish billable hours since orientation ended. I’m staffed on a handful of deals, but the work isn’t that heavy. Partner keeps saying there’s tons of work to go around, but none of it is flowing to me. I’m nervous about asking for more work in case the deals I’m already on pick up the next couple of weeks. Should I ask for more work? Should I be concerned about hitting the yearly billable/qualifying for year end bonus?
