Really interested in ML Engineering/DS type work and considering an online MS in either CS or DS. Specifically online MSCS at GATech or UofI, or MIDS @ Berkeley. I have a non-CS engineering degree and ~3 YOE working in a data engineer type role. Should I go for a data science or computer science route?

These online degrees are overpriced cash grabs and as someone that works in the field you just mentioned I can tell you with confidence that they don’t adequately prepare people for the field.

There are many online resources for learning this skills without shelling out $50,000. Learn Python / SQL on Coursera, do some robust projects on your own, and then start applying for entry level roles. Lots of people start with BI and then progress to MLE/DS as the latter are much more challenging.

Some people do perceive it differently; however many people acknowledge that it’s just the way of the future. Personally, I compare GT OMSA courses to my on-campus engineering degree and don’t think quality suffered. So when I do my hiring in the future, I’d treat it accordingly

CS will give you a more thorough education, such as coding fundamentals and object oriented programming. Many MS in CS programs allow you to pick ML classes as the electives. MS in DS programs are newer and don’t give you the same depth of education. I’d go with MS in CS, Stat, or Applied Math

Leave it to consultants that have no industry or tech experience to think they know how best advise in these situations. This is why I left lmao

Look closely at the curriculum and professors in the programs. I wouldn’t say that every analytics/data science degree is worthless (I have one) but there is an incredibly wide range in scope and quality. Would recommend something that gives you strong theoretical underpinnings. Learning how to call a certain library or function you can learn from a wide range of MOOCs.

Also if you can work it financially then would recommend full time. I spent at least as much time reading textbooks as I did in class and working on projects, and it really helped me grasp the concepts. Difficult to motivate yourself to do if you are working full time at the same time.

I did the Columbia Online ML/AI cert... Total Garbage. Prerecorded talking heads who were hard to understand, didn't really "teach" as much as read math formulas. Hands on exercises were good, but I spent hours teaching myself... At least I can flex now... 😁

Just came from Accenture - just go network with Applied Intelligence! They’re desperate for people. If you’re strategy, Digital strategy is a great entry. If Tech, just go straight to DS. A real degree is overkill

smart

Go data science route. I did an in ml role. Ml is apart of data science. Good luck

Hi all, I have an offer for 63k in the Phx office for entry level tech consulting. Just wanted to know if I should negotiate for a higher salary or potential sign on bonus. I was also curious about the promotion structure for the company. To my understanding, promotions are more frequent than B4 due to it being smaller in the consulting world and was wondering how long it would take to hit senior consultant and manager levels.

Hi fishes

Can anyone refer me to the product manager/product specialist role in your company? I am currently serving my notice period.

I see Microsoft’s Audit Manger position requiring 3 + YOE. That sounds odd to me. I would expect at least 5 + YOE.

Do Audit Managers prepare work papers in this case ? Just curious.

Thoughts please..

Been for a company for over 2years. The executive team is very much a boy's club. There are a few women in management roles but zero ethnicity diversity there. I raised my concern to HR in feb. And they are just now deciding to do something about it. They want me (white female) to put together a diversity committee. Any suggestions on how to go about it? How to attract volunteers to the committee? I want to make sure I get the right people involved in this, to push for changes.

I recently started applying to new jobs mostly to find my market value to bring back to my current firm in support of a compensation increase request. I really love my team and have 4 YOE with this firm. I was presented with an offer from a competitor at a 46% increase in salary.
