I think educating our communities on the importance of going to the doctor early and often and not relying on home remedies is essential. There might be some underlying issues that they didn’t even know about. This is heart breaking!
I generally agree with D1, although I wouldn’t characterize the sentiment as “can’t be bothered.” I think Black people look to different sources for solutions even when they are insured and see hospitals as a last resort. I see it as a combination of medical distrust and viewing insurance as a complex and unpredictable interaction.
With this in mind, I think there’s a need to educate/simplify and “flip the funnel”
So what are we part of the privileged class elite going to do to help or help our fellow black folks at this time? I for one am organizing a fundraiser to donate to community orgs in my city focused on supporting black ppl and facilitating a panel.
Could you share a link for those who want to participate?
Agree with most of the comments above, but want to add that black ppl largely believed they could not and would not get this virus and were very late to the party of staying in and staying put. Even now, with death after death, our younger ppl are hanging out in large groups not abiding, AT ALL. So while I do believe a lot of it is connected to healthcare and the lack of job security, a large part of it is also related to just flat out being careless, at least here in Detroit. And it is heartbreaking

Facts!
I have a lot of friends that think this is a conspiracy and don’t believe it’s real and keep referencing Facebook videos of some nurse to back of their point
One thinks it’s not COVID killing people but it’s the 5g towers
I have one friend who is still partying (house party or underground clubs as real clubs/bars are closed) on Saturday and turned around and went to church on Sunday with hundreds of people.
I’m very religious but idk, this blatant I’m covered by the blood so I can go out and do as I please don’t sit right with me. But that’s a whole other conversation
I’d like to see this data compared to other outbreaks. While this may be true, context is important.
My experience is that blacks are generally distrusting of medical personnel and that’s tragic because there’s so much history.
SC1 what other outbreaks of this magnitude are there? If you need more data just do a google search on medical facilities and quality of health care in black neighborhoods. Or if you’re black ask your family for more insight.
Correction - 58% of Deaths in Cook County, but 70% of Deaths in Chicago
It’s important to consider relativity. These cities are predominantly black so proportionally will have higher numbers.
Did you get a chance to read the article? It addresses the relativity. Milwaukee is only 37% black, Cook County is only 22% black....
