Same thing happened to me at a FAANG company.
My strategy : I took the call, heard them out, and later expressed that I appreciated the outreach but was more interested in xxx kind of roles. As a follow up I asked if she’d be comfortable sharing my resume with a recruiter who focuses on those roles
Their response: Thanked me for my time, asked for any one I’d recommend (I recommended someone), and then sent my resume to a different internal recruiter more aligned with my preferences
Outcome: New recruiter reached out a few weeks later and we kicked off the recruiting process for a role that I think is perfect.
TL;DR: Take the call, make them like you, try convince them to “refer” you to a more preferable role (recruiters have internal networks and help each other)
Good Luck!
Yes. And see where it goes. There may always be unexpected good things.
A while ago a recruiter had reached out to me for a job that I was over-qualified for and had no interest. I responded back and suggested a friend of mine was qualified for it and was interested. He got the job.
Fast forward some years later...the recruiter was looking for a job and I was able to connect the recruiter to another recruiter in the prospective company and help return the favor.
All this to say, if you approach with a positive attitude you can take in different directions that simply turning it down (give you’re interested in the company).
