Received a verbal job offer on Tues. $5k short of what I had said was my desired range but still up from my current salary. We set up a call for Thurs to discuss further. On Wed they sent me all benefits info. Thursday on the call I asked if we could either increase moving stipend or get closer to my desired salary. They said no, and I asked them to send over written offer and I would let them know by Fri. They then email they are no longer offering me the position and repost it the next day:

This is extremely petty and small of the company. It’s a red flag and I’d be happy to have dodged a bullet.

Yeah, you sounded quite polite about it without giving ultimatums. It’s quite strange indeed from them, and very unprofessional

My questions: is always negotiate salary outdated advice? Me and my partner are crushed as this offer would have allowed us to move cross country back to the state that both of our parents live in. Obviously many will say you won’t want to work there anyways, but this opportunity was also largely about moving back home for us as well. I work in the sports industry so not quite as many opportunities in specific locations as most industries. Did I do something wrong? Are there other ways to go about salary negotiations and/or is it more treacherous now a days than in the past? This was my first time negotiating salary with a new company as only places I’ve worked before are first job out of college which I was furloughed from due to pandemic, and my first job after pandemic, so was relatively desperate both times.

Wow. You did absolutely nothing wrong. Negotiating salary is still very much the norm. To echo what everyone else said; they would have been a disaster to work for. Even though it feels like you may have lost a dream opportunity, I'm not sure the opportunity was ever there to begin with. What would have happened after you made your move and found out how petty they could be after? I'm sorry you went through that and I hope you find a brilliant opportunity soon.

Have worked past 3 years at a buy side HY credit shop. Great role out of school with solid WL balance but proven difficult to transition into some strategic finance roles without banking experience. Have come across a small bank in NYC, spoken to the entire team (all incredibly nice), and seems to provide great access to founders (deals <$100mm) but the banking hours worry me. What parts am I overlooking? Can you truly find a way to move to the city with a banking job and still enjoy your life?

I am in a tech IC position. One of friends switched to FAANG by converting the profile to consultant profile. The friend who might have less tech knowledge than me is now in FAANG and earning more. If the end goal would be that the friend might one day be a product manager and me an engineering manager taking instructions from the same friend, isn't consultant profile an easier path to growth. I had been practising DSA for years and the competition is only ever growing.

(1) Should I be rounding & say I make $80k or be transparent at exactly what I'm making
(2) How do you know what to ask for? For ex, been seeing posts on Siegfried Group with ppl saying they make $100k. Should I be asking for that initially? I don't want to seem like a gold digger but also don't want to aim low

Hi, I changed my job like 3 months ago, it was supposed to be a lead front end engineer position, but after and awful onboarding I’m just a regular dev in a project that is not yet live but requires a lot of refactor. It was supposed to be a project to get familiar with the company but at this point I don’t know what to do. Give them some time, talk with them about my situation or just look for another job. What do you think about it?

Hi, I started my Digital Marketing business about 7-8 months ago with only 2.7 lakh rupees. I've been facing losses every month since then. I understand that I'm failing because I am working alone. I need to know what I'm doing wrong with my pitch and my approach to onboard new clients.

Also I am open to discussing partners, marketers, and investors even though I have nothing extraordinary to offer right now. But I have a really good brand, story, and grit to make it big with the right help.

This person doesn’t necessarily need to have both skills but if they did great, but if only one, great too.

I’ve been in this career for almost 5 years now, but have been at smaller orgs with little grasp of comms/PR the whole time. I’ve had some successes, but no real mentoring. It’s mostly been me playing around with trial and error. Lately I’m feeling stagnant! I could use tips on getting noticed by more comms savvy companies where I could really learn the trade.
