1. MBB is around ~160K base plus 30-40k signing bonus and 20% bonus. BCG pays the most here I believe.
2. Big 4: depends on if you’re coming in as consultant or SC. Cs top out at 90k with a lot of people making below that. SCs top out at 120k. Signing bonus anywhere from 10-20k. Bonus is 5-10%.
3. Wlb is nonexistent at either firms first few years unless you’re benched.

As a domestic mba graduate, most international students have an extremely hard time connecting successfully with firms during networking sessions. You need to consider that. International students that go to US seem to be more successful in landing MBB or consulting.
2. Progression is 2-3 years per role before promotion.
3. Exits in Canada will usually be financial services firms, pharmas, energy firms.

like

As for WLB weekends are strongly protected but otherwise plan to work 12+ hours mon-thurs, usually 8-9 hours on Fridays.

like

Not protected at big 4

MBB base is closer to $200K. McK/BCG pay is same while Bain is about $15K lower (unless this has changed which it often does).

I’d say it’s only about 1-2% a year of Rotmans class that lands in MBB. That includes everyone, not just those interested in consulting. However, I would say it’s not because of “limited opening” and rather profiles and case/interview performance.

like

Ivey would be your best shot if you must do your MBA in Canada and even then you’ll need a great profile and be top of the class

like

OP he/she is referring to MBB, canadian schools in general don’t place more than low single digit % every year. Your chances are low unless you’re stellar (and if you are, arguably, you’d be better served by a top school south of the border).

like

Switch to MBB out of Rotman will be a slim chance, I would think about factoring big 4 salary in your calculations instead.

May I ask why you’re pursuing consulting out of rotman / what you’re looking to get out of it? It’s not really a consulting school.

like

Direct experience in those two fields would be more helpful. Check out Voila, Loblaws Digital and other e-commerce companies as potential exits S well

like

For MBB you want to be in the top 10% or at least 25% at either school - consider which style of learning is better for you. Case vs non case

like

As another perspective, unless you are absolutely convinced on MBB (I was convinced until time passed and I found other better boutique options including freelancing), I would thoroughly vet all options including tech sales and tech product management before committing to a school because of an end goal. I made this mistake and realities are that less than 5% get into MBB & your fit/learning matters way more. And I also agree with the person who posted above who said that direct experience in desired field will likely be better than consulting if that is the end goal. Most consulting firms have a lot of breadth and not a lot of depth, and your direct experience will benefit you much more because eventually people will need depth unless you are 10+ years of experience.

smart

I would base your payback on the average graduating salary and look into a 1 year program because the payback is quicker but you lose the chance to intern/network

Where are you coming from?

Bangalore, India

Looking to transition out of Management Consulting and going into big tech in NYC. Ideally, I would love to go in as a PMM; however I’ve heard it’s very difficult to make that jump if you don’t have a degree in engineering or CS (I’m a liberal arts graduate and in the final year of a part-time mba). Should I look to apply as a program manager role since it’s more likely my consulting experience will apply to that and see if I can transition into a PMM role from there?

Curious to see your thoughts on the two career options below -

Option A: stick it out in consulting as equity partner for another 25 yrs (MBB)

Option B: move to corporate strategy in a n-2 role at a fortune 100 company (you may be stuck in that role for a few years)

Which one has better long term wealth potential? Which one is a better choice from WLB?
