They tried paying teachers our hourly rate to tutor. They tried paying us to do "quarantine assistance" for students at home with covid. They could barely get anyone to do it. No one wants MORE WORK. We're exhausted! Finally decided "Why don't we pay them for what they're already doing? Then maybe they'll take our money." What a concept. 🤦‍♀️

They tried that at my school (after school tutoring), only 3 people signed up. All money ain’t good money. Folks are mentally & physically exhausted! I would rather see them assign interventionist to schools to support students who are struggling. But, that’s too much like right. Let’s keep draining the teachers. 🙄

I would take that deal! Extra pay for work we already have to do. WAY better deal then extra pay for extra work. 🥳

Extra duty has always been paid in my district.

I actually don’t have a planning period. We have a teacher shortage. I am teaching on my prep. If it wasn’t paid I would refuse. I’m willing to give up time at home to work but not for free.

I agreed to tutor after school for my hourly rate. I got some home improvements paid for and Christmas gifts without using a single credit card! I was excited about the chance to make some extra money!

@GES, Yeah, I hear you. And in the past, if I needed a few extra dollars and had the time and the physical capacity to do so, I would have done it too. But everything is a trade-off, and this year my time and physical exertion are far too precious for me to give up for the atrocity that is my one hour of pay.

Was that your union at work or how did that come about? Very nice!

ESAT, I'm not sure how it was negotiated. All I heard was that they observed teachers were not picking up the other options, and they have to spend this money or else they lose it. CHS1, I keep seeing all these posts about us not having a union. All coming from California people. We HAVE a union. It is our "Right-to-Work" state status that puts our union in a difficult position. Our union bargains for us. But at the end of the day, the districts have to *agree* to the terms in order for them to be met. They are *allowed* to turn the union's request down. Districts must decide whether or not they care to meet teachers' needs according to the union's requests. Districts must decide what matters to them, and how they will function. While plenty of teachers are leaving Florida, there are *always* teachers coming in to replace them. So it depends on how much they (districts) care about the quality of education children are receiving vs. having a warm body in the room for the kids. Personally, I'm thankful my district opted to do this. Did they try to get more work out of us to "justify" paying us? Sure. But so few teachers were willing to stay longer than is required by our contract that it didn't work. Teachers are choosing to value our personal time and health over the additional pay we so desperately need, so the district has no choice but to find other ways to spend what they've been given. Again. I'll take it. 🤷‍♀️

I’ve wanted to take in my kiddos needed help with assignments and can’t seem to get support at home. To catch them up, they are struggling after year of virtual

As stressful as this time is, it's also a YUGE opportunity for a nation-wide teachable moment. We're being tested as families, communities, schools and a nation. Also, it will be interesting to see what distance learning is like as it will be more common in the future. I think it would be a good compare/contrast lesson for kids when they come back and maybe it will get them to appreciate brick and mortar school a little bit more...

Don’t want to make any “bad” professional decisions. For context: For work I always do the middle part but as soon as work is over I switch my hair back to my perm look.
