Received an offer for 50% more comp but just started a project where the client specifically requested that I deliver the work and there really isn’t anyone else who has the knowledge that I do (because of past delivered work) to deliver this within the timeframe. How should I approach leaving?

What do you want to do? Does the new job align with where you want to take your career? Or is it just the money? Is it a rare opportunity, or are you just significantly underpaid at Accenture? Consider all that ...
Also, if you’ve decided to leave, give them a 3 week notice to show you’re considerate, and are willing to transition to someone else. You’re obviously considerate, but this will help you show it, and not burn bridges in case you need to talk to your old team again.

@OP, here's what happened to me. After 6 years at EY, the firm decided to let me go because my utilization was lower than my peers (it was in the 70%), even though I was in the process of writing an SOW for a multi-million dollar project that the client approved. As others mentioned, your firm won't hesitate to let you go, why should you care. Look out for yourself and take the pay raise. Make sure that you do a proper turnover and if the firm doesn't have someone trained to take over, they'll place someone untrained and have them figure it out.

likeupliftingfunny

For sure M2, and I was on projects where I had no business being in, but since the project needed the head count, I was placed and had to shoot from the hip. Part of it made me cynical about consulting, but now that I'm out, I'm happier and less stressed out.

Accenture doesn’t give a crap about you. Leave with the appropriate two week notice.

SA1 is adorable 😂

Who cares, put yourself first! 50% is a lot. If you want to stay, ask Accenture to match the new offer. If they can’t, give them a 2 weeks notice and leave.

likesmart

Don’t ask. If they want you, they’ll ask you the specifics and match it.

like

Thanks all. I’ll give my standard 2 week notice

like

Took 40 mins but not bad. Good luck!

like

The minute firm feels your role could be made redundant they ll let you go without a second thought - so just give them a Two weeks notice and pack ur bags

like

Exactly this.

I worked at a bulge bracket investment bank once.

They laid off 20% of our devision after Great Recession. They asked the president of the firm back then why 20%...he said they wanted to give a strong message, 15 wouldn’t do it. 5% corresponded to thousands of people and their families. They are laid off probably based on an hour long discussion between a few ultra wealthy execs.

My point is that we are just numbers for the company. No one gives a shit. Do what’s best for you.

likehelpful

People need to understand that they aren’t special. Hate to break it to you, but you aren’t the only person in the world with “knowledge” you have. Sure, maybe you can do it better and quicker than others, but I guarantee Accenture has others who can complete the task too.

Soon as you start realizing how replaceable you are, the faster you will realize you should take this offer

Everyone who is saying ACN or any company will not t hesitate to let you go is 100% correct. I have seen this happen time and time again — NO-ONE is indispensable. Also remember that your client is not your employer. I once stayed with a company because my client begged me to and lived to regret it. Not because I was later let go (I wasn’t) but because I regretted my decision.

like

Just ask yourself this - Why am a I worried about leaving a firm that iis underpaying so much of what the market is willing to pay me?

likeuplifting

ACN can renegotiate the terms if you depart, they have ways around the commercials and timeframes. Give you're notice and enjoy you're new role, don't look back.

like

I don’t want to stay at ACN. I also don’t want to burn bridges with my team because I do like them as friends

I was once in a similar spot. I was very close with the client and they/my team would have been in a really tough spot if I had left. Gave my firm a shot to match, which they did. A tough decision, but it’s what I felt was right in my gut.

Call the client and have a frank conversation. Tell them you will personally handpick your replacement and make sure this individual is ready before your departure.

AmazIng you got a 50% raise — you have to take it!

To be fair, $50k to $75k is a 50% raise and still not enough to pay rent and student loans for most in most parts of the country. Of course, boomers and genX-ers would say you could do it if you weren’t “wasting all that money on groceries”

Ladies, could you please share stories of someone not believing in you at work? And then working through this.
The manager at my current project basically told me that he doesn't think I can make it to manager grade, lack people skills and am unwilling to improve (in his eyes). But at the same time he wouldn't even let me talk to the client, or present anything, is very sharp with me at pointing out things he doesn't like.
The worst thing is that I stopped believing in myself too. Feel hopeless

I was at a conference and a client of ours tried to sneak up behind me at our booth. I was wearing an oculus and unable to tell who/ what was around me. I took the oculus off to find this man (who had been harassing me for days) standing immediately behind me about as close as he could. He then said, "awww, I told your coworkers not to say anything, I wanted you to bump me"

I felt so shocked and ashamed and quickly ran off to the bathroom. My own manager was going to let this man grope me.

How “professional” do people act in consulting? I’m considering transitioning from PE to management consulting (long story, don’t ask) and curious what the work environment is like. In finance (at least in my experience) people will use profanity during official meetings and I have no problem saying ‘waddup’ to a partner. Obviously these aren’t important but I’m just curious if people are more ‘buttoned up’ in consulting? Of course they are around the client but what about behind closed doors?
