Received and eval that I disagree with some points pretty strongly. Mad at myself that I’m afraid to say much I’m positive it will end up hurting more than solving.

Go through the eval line by line and highlight which sentences are not fact based. Then discuss with your reviewer the sentences you don’t agree with. Take the emotion out of it and ask for more context / share your POV

You really shouldn’t miss your opportunity to stand up for yourself. If you don’t do it, you’ll have that regret and that person will carry their misperceptions of you as well. I’ve addressed 3 snapshots that I disagreed with and they were all changed. The reason - folks didn’t know what I did and they had misperceptions. Do it for you and them!

“Get comfortable being uncomfortable” and it pays off. I’ve argued many reviews successfully- try to have tangible evidence of how you met/exceeded the criteria you’re reviewed against. I usually look one level above (so as a senior look towards manager) and give examples of how you’re meeting those goals. The worst that will happen is they’ll say no (which also happens as well) but honestly the number of times my reviewers have said “oh I forgot you did that” or point blank weren’t even aware of things I was managing/doing, it’s worth it in the end. Also very valid point that you gain respect with your reviewer, and usually shows that you care enough to fight for it Good luck!

It’s definitely a tough thing to do, but worth doing. I had a similar situation when I was a staff and a Sr Manager gave me a piss poor eval that couldn’t be further from the truth (I also know he copy pasted straight from the performance guide). I talked to him about it and he changed the eval which ended up helping me a lot come leveling meetings since being so new into the game, evals are really all they can base things on.

You should absolutely stand up for yourself. Gather your thoughts, see if you have any emails or other documentation to support what you are saying, just be prepared with what you want to say and say it. You truly are in charge of your own career so don't let someone else steer it... be professional, not emotional, and make your case. Good luck!

I’ve had a lot of peers who successfully negotiated better performance evals, and the person who gave them had a lot of respect for them for it. Don’t be afraid to! Its your career!

I’ve challenged comments in reviews lots of times. I get especially annoyed with vague comments with no reference to actual facts. Perhaps the reviewer was just throwing something down to get it done. If for example, I struggled with a particular area in the past, the reviewer noted it in subsequent reviews like I have to carry it around for the rest of my life, well that really irritates me. I will point out that I’ve made improvements in that area, they are generalizing about other engagements, and I’d like them to revise. If you have facts to support what you are saying, most reviewers will respect that and make the change.

I’m the one whose ex won’t pay for college - and I have an update. My ex texted me today that he and his wife are buying our son a car (!!) for Christmas. On the one hand, it’s one less expense for me. On the other hand, my ex won’t pay for college and he owes me at least $10K for previous medical expenses, but he can find money for a car - which is a “fun” expense that will get him brownie points with our son. Whatever - my son benefits, but talk about a “Disneyland Dad.” Ugh.

Need some advice. I’m 21, my partner is 29. We have a son together. As I get older, I realize I don’t know if I’m ready to settle down completely. I know that sounds crazy, because I am a mom, but I want to travel around and my partner thinks it’s not doable with a family. I also want to eventually move out of state to explore other opportunities, but he’s not interested. He thinks we are just at two different points in our life. Is this a reason to part ways?
