First off, any good manager should be giving you feedback on areas to improve otherwise you will never make it to the next level. Was the feedback “you are not meeting expectations with communication” or “over the next x weeks work toward improving xyz”. I think they are different. Also ask them for specific examples if they didn’t provide (especially with quality). Lastly, come up with some steps you based on the specific feedback (perhaps more frequent check ins if communication is lacking, etc) and run the plan by them to get their by in. That way they can see your working toward it and may be able to give additional suggestions on how to improve.

So I was diagnosed w cancer and have spent the last 6 months in surgery, chemo, rocs, etc. I’ve not stopped working accept for 2 weeks post surgery. It’s a second time I’m asked to pick up unfinished work from a practice team member moving on to a more interesting project..
