I just started a job as a personal injury attorney. Im starting with small claims cases to gain trial experience. Right now I'm waiting for trial dates to be set but what are some things to do now?

Partner just sat me down to discuss a “billing issue” and told me I’m “too efficient.” This is the second partner and firm to raise this concern. The partners are apparently otherwise very pleased with the quality of my work but need me to make sure I’m billing as much as reasonably possible without being unethical. Tips to cover all my bases/leave no stone unturned when billing to capture as much time as is appropriate for an assignment?

How far in advance do you advise your assistant that you will need them to efile something? I get pushback from my assistant about not giving adequate notice when I tell her in the AM that I will need her to file something in the PM. 10th year partner at litigation defense firm. My billables are 2040 a year, with no time off. BD and associate training are non billable but required.

Any advice on breaking bad habits/mentalities after leaving a toxic firm? I just started at a new firm that I genuinely really like, but I’ve started to realize how much my prior, very toxic firm messed up my mentality about certain things. For example, the partners at my new firm are super approachable and supportive, but I feel like my old firm conditioned me to still be deeply terrified of reaching out to partners in general with questions and to get feedback. I’d love to hear your thoughts!
